Doughty should've won it in 2014 ... they gave it to dunking doughnuts.

Yeah they could have put a much better "NHL ready" team together but seemed to go way heavier than I expected on the prospects and also stockpilled a shit load of picks. In the long run it will probably pay off but they will suck serious balls in their first year.

Agreed. I think the owner talked to previous expansions though and chose this approach. Every other expansion team has sucked the balls for a decade or so. This tactic should make them competitive within half that time.

Wouldn't you still want to take advantage of the better talent available to them, compared to previous expansions? I mean, grabbing better players now still gives you more assets to do what you please (keep, trade etc). They already have (3) 1st round picks this year lol. I'd still rather have a nice top D pairing (Methot and Dumba, for example) out there and you can always trade them for picks at the deadline or something. Obviously I have no clue how to build an expansion team, so not trying to say that I know more than McPhee. I just feel like I'd grab the best talent that I could and sell off as needed.

They could of went that way but I think their feeling was that by both competing for the top 5 picks for a few years and having a huge surplus of picks off the bat they could simulate 10 years of pain in half that time or less. I definitely feel they have some sort of long term plan here that would make even more sense if we were in their front office.

On the Dumba note, yeah that was weird. However I also feel they may of selected a few of their D just because they already had trade deals on the go for those players. Some will likely not happen which makes the picks look weird.

Ya, true. Seems like they got a lot of 25 year olds (or around that) and some guys with size. So it still isn't a terrible roster, but you are probably right about the long term thing. And I guess they will be decent-enough now, but worth it to get good later. I still thought they yanked 2 solid players off of FLA too, which was good.

The Panarin for Saad is crazy. Do they think he is only good because of Kane? Even so, those 2 have crazy good chemistry. Kinda shocked they would trade him. Saad is awesome though.

This trade was made to replace Hossa as best they could. Hossa is likely done playing hockey if you believe the medical interviews that have been playing on Canadian Sports Television. There have been a few players that have had this level of reaction and basically all of them retired, it just wasn't possible for them to bounce back. Saad is about the best safe option the Blackhawks had to replace Hossa, another big body who can score.

Ya I get that. And I also can't see 81 coming back. But I still think it is a bit of a gamble. Saad is def the more rounded player but Panarin is such a ridiculous offensive talent. His chemistry with Kane is nuts.

Dumb move. Panerin is a beast and should have been setup to take kanes spot on the team in a few years.

The hjalmarsen trade was dumb as well. "Hey we have weak defense, let's get rid of one of our best defenders".

Dunno about that. Saad makes 6mil which some think is too much for him (I think it's borderline, but not bad). But they just cleared 6mil of cap space from Hossa. You could keep Panarin now and let him and Kane do their thing and still go out and sign a defensive fwd for like 3mil (like Bonino or something). And besides, that is still 2 years that you can try to win now and figure that out 2 years from now. That would be like the Pens trading Murray now because in 2 years he will need like 7mil (which he will get). But he's not going anywhere.

Again, not saying it is a bad move, but seems odd in my opinion.

Methot to Toronto is not happening. Player just put in his no trade list and Toronto is on it.

Also Oshos just got paid. Not sure he's worth 6 million a year over 8 years. The timeline might hurt on the backend.

This. I would dump kane in 2yrs depending on how panarin developed.

Not a manager so I have no idea if that's even contractually possible, but still... Lol

They would never dump Kane. No manager wants to take a beating in his own office.
