I have an 05 tacoma trd sport with around 147k miles.

I've been chasing a howling noise for a couple weeks now. Gets louder with speed and stops when you turn right.

I have changed both front hub assemblies....

    I have rotated the tires....

I have changed rear diff fluid...

Tires are ltx ms2 with less than 15k miles.

Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't know what to do next. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.

If you put it into 4wd, does it go away?

Jack it up by the rear axle and put it on jack stands.

Grab the tire with both hands at opposite points and see if there's side to side play. A quick web search will produce some video examples for you to follow.

Thanks fellas. I'll check all three. With the symptom of stopping while turning Is one more likely than the other

some of the more aggressive mud tires will make more noise than others.

I'd bet it's the pinion bearing... hopefully the outer bearing

Put up on stands and ran in gear. Could hear noise so should eliminate front end?

No play in rear wheels when tested as advised. Doesn't appear to be any play where drive shaft enters diff...

Only "odd" sound is when off and you manually turn the tires there is a squeak from the carrier bearing

Does your c.b have any movement in it when you push up on the drive line?

The bearing itself? There is some movement in the shaft if I press up on it. In addition I did put the truck on jack stands and out in gear. With it on the stands u could still hear the noise. So I guess the front end has just been eliminated

Yes the rubber part of it. If there is significant movement it will cause a howl and some vibrations

Even though the noise goes away when turning it could still be the carrierbaearing?

It's possible but If the play I. The bearing is minimal then I would rule it out. Bad bearings usually howl when going bad so it could be the thrust bearing in the rear end as well.

I think it's minimal. It does make a high pitch sound when just turning the wheels though just hard to believe something in the rear is going bad. I've pulled a trailer a hand full of times. I mean less than 10 in 9 years
