Odd vibrations - 2017 Tacoma TRD Sport

I would try a different dealership. Its pretty obvious from your videos there is an abnormal shake in the steering wheel. Could be anything from an alignment issue, wheel balancing, or drive train balancing. If your claiming that it shakes like that on all roads and highways, get a 2nd opinion at a different dealership.

 

I noticed part of your video is at ~2100-2200 RPM. Have you seen the buzzing vibration thread?

Part of it may be due to that. At that RPM I have quite a strong buzzing, high frequency vibration in the steering wheel, floor, gas pedal etc.

You could have other issues as well but at least that I think it just a shitty design and failure to damp out engine/exhaust vibration.

 

For those following, I swapped my stock wheels back onto the truck and my steering wheel shimmy at highway speeds greatly improved but is still present at points in time.

I took the truck to my dealer today for the 5k service and to look at this issue again, as it's still there on my stock wheels, and they 4 different people couldn't feel or see any issue in the steering wheel.

Other than getting my aftermarket wheels balanced for a 3rd time, does anyone have any other suggestions? Are all terrain tires just more prone to road noise/feedback?

 

Just seeing this reply but yes, the shimmy in the steering wheel has happened on several different roads and speeds but it's not constant, as in it has happened on the same road where it hasn't done it. It's more noticeable on my aftermarket wheels with A/T tires (videos taken on these wheels) compared to the OEM wheels but it is still present.

Is the shop balancing your aftermarket tires and wheels with a Hunter Road Force balancing machine?

If not then find a shop that has one and try it

 

I 2nd that. Especially since it's still under warranty. You'll kick yourself after the warranty for not doing it sooner.

 

It's Belle Tire who did the balanced initially and after I took them back and they said they were in fact Road Force balanced. I do plan to have the Dealership give it a go balancing them too.

I've thought about this, the next nearest one is almost an hour away but it's worth it if they can actually help me. Thankfully I have a Lifetime Powertrain warranty, and also the Toyota Extended warranty that covers everything else the other one doesn't.

 

Ask the Dealer to let you drive another new truck to see if it vibrates the same way.

 

Loose engine or transmission mounts.

 

Not a bad idea, I'm going to have the Dealer re-balance my aftermarket wheels (3rd balance) to rule that out (again) and could test drive one during this.

 

Since you haven't had a truck before it would be best to rule it out by driving another one, that said, I've owned 4 Tacoma's and none have vibrated.

 

My stock tires shook a bit too. Then I bought T4R Pro rims with KO2 tires and the steering shook like crazy. Had to have them rebalanced 3 times, then they were smooth as glass. All shaking stopped until I ran over a piece of metal on my rear tire. Had the tire replaced the eve before I took off for a trip up north. That was the worse ride I've ever taken in my life. The truck bounced and seats shook for the whole 800 mile round trip. Then I took it back to Americas tire when I got back home to have it rebalanced and it's back to smooth as glass for me. So, I think it may be a balance issue... I'd take it back to have it rebalanced.

 

This gives me hope! Really hoping it is just a tire balance issue but after having them rebalanced twice I lost hope. As I said I'm going to have the Dealer do it this time around instead of Belle Tire.

 

How did you get a lifetime power train Waranty?

 

You go to a dealer that offers it. Normally requires you to do all service at that dealer.

 

It's just something my specific dealer offered, included with the purchase of a new vehicle. They're the only one in Michigan to do it.

 

I also had a vibration issue on my TRD sport 4x4 which was very close to the video at the beginning of this post. After getting my tires balanced the second time with a Road Force Balancing Machine, the Vibrations were virtually eliminated. I'm including a You Tube video that explains what the significates are and possibly why the vibration issue isn't a problem for the TRD Off Road which have larger profile tires.

Thanks for your input and the videos! I've been meaning to get into the Dealer to have my wheels re-balanced for the 3rd time. Both of the previous times were on a Road Force machine (or so they said) but in hoping the Dealers is better or more accurate.

 

The steering wheel shake is definitely not normal. I also have the trd sport and have never had the shakes you do. For a companion point I owned a 2013 RAV4 before the Tacoma. Obviously the Rav4 was "sportier" (I know...hard to call a soccer mom car sporty, I hate myself for typing it), but I personally don't find the ride quality to be drastically different. Cars always drift over the small bumps better and trucks handle the big ones better. Kinda averages out in my opinion. The only thing I notice is the 2k rpm noise/vibration mentioned in previous posts, which I suppose is normal for this truck, and some wind noise from the side view mirrors.

Overall still love my access cab sport.
