Lol, I always love how quickly the Toyota faithful turn on new products... it's so dumb.

OP, dont fall for this shit.

It doesn't really get much better. Matter of fact, most people report it shifts the best once the learning as been cleared and its "relearning". So if you didn't like it during the test drive/learning period, you'll hate it worse when it learns how to suck more.

I was agreeing with you, to be clear.

Don't judge me by my current vehicle, I love the 3rd (turd) gen.

OP, you are experiencing exactly what I experienced.

I was all set to buy a new 2016 Tacoma until I drove it (it was pre-TSB by the way)

Awful shifting, to the point were I couldn't really gauge the rest of the truck due to being constantly reminded by the transmission of how bad it shifted.

An MT might be a better choice for some but nerve damage in my left leg excludes an MT for daily driving for me, so I can get any transmission I want as long as I want an auto. When you hear the snap, look down and see your left foot facing backwards, it really gets your attention.

So I waited until after the first PCM flash and drove another 2016. Still there.

Waited longer and have now driven 3 different 2017 models, all of which still shifted funky.

I may not have noticed it so much on the later 2017 trucks if I had not driven the 1st 2016 before the TSB.

That one seared the problem into my consciousness and I can't un-see it.

In the end I stopped waiting and bought something else.

To be fair, I have not driven a used one with several thousand miles on it and many here say the shifting improves after it "learns" driving patterns, so I recommend that you try one that has had time to program itself. YMMV

I have no doubt that I will get flamed because I don't own a 3rd gen, but there is a reason I don't own a 3rd gen and it's not because I didn't want one.

Not underpowered at all, it has plenty of get up for what it needs to do. It's been the most powerful and capable Toyota I've owned in 30+ years.

Not sure why you're always equating this to the "American thing" unless you're just not that well informed.

For now, with lack of competition. Lets see what happens when Ford/Jeep/others enter the field.

Test drive a new new one.... I just traded in my ‘16 (built 05/16) for a ‘17 built in 05/17 and it is a completely different truck than the first. Toyota likely incorporated line changes in the build.

Lack of competition? There is the Colorado, Canyon, Frontier and Ridgeline. The Tacoma destroys all of them in sales.

I'd like to see how the Ranger and Jeep truck stack up to the 3rd gen... the Colorado was close to beating out the 3rd gen, but those magazine reviews only get you so far. I've personally driven a Colorado and it's laughable to think that someone would choose a Colorado/Canyon over a Tacoma. That diesel engine has to be a cruel joke...

Yeah I tried to persuade my wife to go down that road with another suv make/model that had all those fancy features, but after driving a T4R for over 10+ years without any issues or time spent at the stealrship, all I could persuade her into was a T4R ltd, which is VERY limited on features by those standards.
But that's also a win for me as I don't anticipate any headaches or wasting any of my precious time I can spend here, instead of at the stealership

    Cheers!

Close to beating it out in what? Not in sales. It averages around half the sales of the Tacoma.

IMO, the Ranger is the only one that stands of chance of adding real competition. And that's if it looks like a smaller f150. If it looks anything like what it currently looks like in the rest of the world, then I don't see it.

If it looks like a smaller F150, and has the 2.7 ecoboost, that would capture my attention.

Manual tran for the win. But, I haven't driven an auto taco, except for the 10 min test drive that was just to shut up the sales guy, and I have owned 3

Meh, no regrets here! Went from a 13 Sport to 17 OR loaded out with the options. Best part about the switch is the fuel range though!

And OP it gets better, I didn't notice what you mentioned until I drove it home on the highway. It was a little funny using cruise control at 75+ but has since gotten better or I just got used to it.
