Looks to me like that grommet thingy goes in one way when there's no wires in it. Cut the wires.

 

Nope!! Went to go get another wire nut and saw the way the thing was made and

Thought about cutting them, but, then I'd have no wire to go to the new light.

The orange connector is a disconnecting means for your light fixture. Most electricians cut the wires and wire direct. Or you can cut two pigtails around eight inches long, push both white and black wires of you pigtails into the connector and wire the other ends into your existing circuit. As for the bushing you where trying to remove, I would bail on it, go to Lowe's and buy a new one. It's called a half inch knock out plastic bushing. Pushes right in and protects your wires from the sharp metal edges.

I found that out when talking to my son Think I'm gonna go ahead and use it. That bushing is gone, baby, gone. Was at lowe's looking for a bigger wire nut and asked the guy helping me. Once I saw how it was made, it was gone!!!! Thanks for the tips, though. Just put the wire nuts on for the night so I could turn the lights back on.... will install the new one tomorrow.
