Any Golfers & Tips for a newbie at this sport?

so i played my first 13holes last wed up in NW AR & i sucked bigtime! the only reason i am even gettin into the whole golf scene is bc apparently the best relationships in business as well as the most important decisions are made on the golf course. this is what one of my co-workers told me & i can see his point somewhat.

i'll be gettin my clubs soon & i'll be practicin when i get them at one of the many local ranges around here. i got the 'rules of golf' book and aint started readin it just yet, but does anyone have any suggestions so to speak as far as etiquette on the golf course?? i know u have to be quiet while someone it tee'in off... i just like knowin what is expected from a newbie in this type sport.

I am not an extremely great golfer but I am better then average. I shoot in the mid 80's. Golf is an extremely hard sport that requires a lot of practice to be good and even more to be great. I would recommend getting some lessons to at least start you off. It would be very beneficial to do this at the beginning stages instead of learning a bunch of bad habits and then trying to break them later on.

Just remember to have fun, getting upset and having a negative attitude isn't enjoyable for you and the people you play with. You will play better if you think positive.

As for a first set of clubs, definitely get hybrids. Adams golf makes some really nice affordable sets.

 

I try not to play with people who take it too seriously............because I SUCK!!! Even after 15 years I still can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Just got to where I could consistently shoot in the mid 90's last year and that's just gonna have to be good enough for me. If you need to try and impress someone with your game, the only advice I could give would be to take some lessons and practice, practice, practice. And don't cheat!!! The rules aren't that complicated, once you play a few times you'll get'em figured out.

i'll never have a negative attitude. there's no way i can play golf with anyone that takes this shit seriously. as for the 1st set of clubs, the guy i work with is gonna sell me a set of wilson clubs that he bought for his daughter that she will never use. i'll only be out $100

well, its not borin so far, only bc we drank beer the whole time and i played golf with my boss and one of my co-workers so it wasnt boring to say the least

i just want to be able to play decent enough if i ever have to take a customer out on the course.

we are gonna sponsor a hole in an upcomin tourney here locally so i'm tryin to get prepared.

when we played last wed we did a scramble

 

i'll suggest a few....

~Always have fun!

~Once you (the ball) reaches the "green" you will want to mark your ball spot with a coin or something like that. DON'T ever mark you ball with an "X" carved into the green.

~Try to NOT walk in someone elses line... "Line" is the space between that ball and the hole.

~Don't take too many practice swings, just hit the ball. No fear

~The player that got the best score on the last hole earns "honers"... Meaning that they Tee off 1st on the next hole.

~When you play on the course, count EVERY stroke. It's the only way you know you're getting better.

~If the group behind you is playing fast, let them play thru your group.

I'm terrible but I love the game. If you have the time, def. get a few lessons in or take a class at the local JC. Prob the most common advice you're gonna get is to keep your head down and the eye on the ball all through the swing. Good luck.

 

I'm a golf pro at a course close to the beaches in Al. and the best tip you're gonna get is to have your clubs "fitted" to you. Take them to a shop or even better buy them from a shop that fits clubs to you. You don't want to learn golf with clubs that are not bent for your body and swing.

 

After thinking some more, I remembered some tips that I wish I would have learned sooner. These are kinda what helped me get out of the hundred's.
1. Keep your head down. I was told to pretend there was a chain attached to my chin with a hook on the other end attached to my groin and if I looked up, the hook would dig in where it would hurt the most. (helped me keep my head down)
2. Don't swing too hard, nice and steady is good. Being in the fairway 200 yds. is better than being in the woods or water at 275 yds.
3. Keep your balance as you swing.
Remember, I play like crap so take this for what it's worth.

 

Is there another way to play golf that my buddies aren't telling me about?

 

Just remember, the angle of the dangle is directly proportional to the heat of the meat, if the mass of the ass remains constant at all times.

Basically long and straight and you be just fine.

I think that was my first lesson. If I remember correctly I shot like a 270 or something after that lesson .

 

i'll have to do that after i get my clubs. i didnt know u could actually get ones u have fitted. the ones im gettin are for women so they will at least be easier to use than the ones i used last week that were men's

i wanna say i shot like a 118-120 bc me & my co-worker hit about the same

 

I started playing lasy year, I suck at it (have yet to break 100) but it is really enjoyable... all I have to add is you'll save money buying used balls at golfballnut.com and get your clubs off ebay or 3balls.com. It's amazing how much cheaper they are than new. i'm not trying to advertise for them that's just where I have found the best deals.... The titleist nxt tour is a great beginner ball in my opinion, plays great and you can get 'em relatively cheap off the mentioned site..... hope that helps

 

I'll definetly keep those sites in mind once i get started. i bought 2 sets of the cheapest balls that academy had the other day that were new and they were like $8.99/set of 15. they had some repo balls but i'd rather have a certain set so i can remember which ones are mine. i hear people can get pissy with u if u dont know which balls are yurs when u go find them durin a scramble

Yea, I get my nxt tour balls for like 9 or 10 bucks a dozen and they are pretty much like new. Those balls are 30-40 bucks a dozen new... according to where you look. As far as marking your ball, just take a sharpie and do your thing. I put a bright orange dot on all of mine.

 

My husband and I tried it for about a year....bought our own clubs & everything.

We gave up and stopped playing. We sucked at it.....spent way too much on balls (sliced into a black hole) and did WAY too much walking in scorching heat. Not enjoyable to us.

The local pitch-n-putt is about my speed.

Atleast you're giving it a try....We bought books & had lessons. Still couldn't get the right swing going.

 

I've been playing for about 4 years now and I love the game! I get free balls because I work at a golf course. Keep practicing and you will get better. Lessons would be your best bet, otherwise you will be practicing bad habits and they will be hard to break at a later date. Have fun out there.
