Exactly. Seriously there are better things to burn brain cells over than routine 4x4 engagement solely for "maintenance" purposes.

Thanks, appreciate all the different opinions. I won't worry about it too much for now. Moving up north soon (maybe) where I will use it then.

Yeah, I had my '11 Tundra for 6 years and would only put it in 4wd when required, and that typically consisted of between 2 & 5 times in the winter, and maybe once on a dirt road or off-road situation, but very often I wouldn't even bother then. I'll bet that truck wasn't in 4wd more than 20 times in 6 years. Still worked great though.

I'll try to remember to do it more often with the Tacoma.

Could be either Washington D.C. or New York. I live in Florida now but I wanted to buy the OR because I knew I may be moving somewhere where 4wd might be needed one day.

Dumb question alert! (New to 4x4)

Why is it bad to engage in pavement? I know it binds but why on pavement and not dirt roads or going up rocks?

NY can get some good storms... you'll be happy you got 4X4... I use it any time we have more than 2" of snow on the HWY... Great safety feature..!!
    Good luck with yer move..

Not a dumb question if you are new to 4x4's. The simple answer it slippage. Tires grip better on pavement than on dirt or gravel roads. You are correct about binding (especially on turning) and a quick search on the Internet can explain the why's better than I can type here.
