Which Tacoma Do I Buy?

I currently own a 2007 Tacoma DC TRD Sport Edition and To this Day I fully regret not purchasing the 4X4 version. Heres the deal, I have decided that I am going to be trading in the 2007 DC for a 2010 DC (4X4 of-course.) Sooooo, do I get the TRD Off-Road Version or the TRD Sport Edition. I really like the look of the Sport edition, (17" Wheels, Color match grille / Bumper and Hood Scoop. Going from 2WD to 4WD will be a huge change in my off-road opportunities, but will I notice a huge difference between the TRD Sport vs. the TRD Off-Road Edition? Am I going to need the Hill Start Assist Control (HAC) and Downhill Assist Control (DAC)?

I know the first thing everyone is gonna ask is "what kind of wheeling do you do?"

Im in to trail riding, mudding, desert running (with some occasional hang time) and some mild hill climbs. With the new 4X4 I will want to get into a little more aggressive trail/hill climbs.

-Icon Stage 2 Kit (2.5" coilovers, rear rez shocks, 1.5" add-a-leaf)
-Camburg UCA (1.25" Uniball)
-BFG AT's LT285/70R17

-Peripheral iPod interface
-Bi-xenon HID's Driving lights Hi & Low beam 6000K and HID fogs 6000K
-Just a small dent/scratch on the bumper (drivers side)

1st gens break down less and have far less problems.

Sounds like you are answering your own question. If your into the type of driving above then you want the off-road. Much more capable then the Sport for serious 4x.

Depends on your needs. The only main difference mechanically is the LSD vs the Locker.

You might lose your hood scoop to if you go to the Off Road LOL

 

Go for the off-road with the locker.

You can mod in the color matched panels and get some aftermarket, or 17 trd's, or FJ rims, or whatever later as well. If you're gunna wheel, the locker can be invaluable.

 

Wouldn’t it be cheaper to by an aftermarket locker than try and convert a TRD Off-Road Tacoma into a TRD Sport? just thinking....

Of all the off roading I've done in SoCal i've never wished I had the locker. Always done just fine without it.

My thinking is, You probably only need the locker if you think you might offroad to the point of damaging the body of your pretty new truck on trails/rocks.

 

Q: Is where your truck can go more important than how pretty it is on the street?

If Yes...
A: OFF ROAD

 

buy the one that will suit your needs best and fit in your budget...

 

Actually, putting your truck in low range and using the A-TRAC (or Rear Locker, if needed) will PREVENT you from having any damage...

Damage will come from speed to clear road hazzards... The A-TRAC and even just low range allows you to crawl over difficult terrain PREVENTING damage!

 

The vibe I meant to put off is that if he feels he might want to tackle the hard trails that he could possible aquire body damage, he will want the locker. I don't even attempt stuff in my truck that could result in a crushed quarter panel, hence I would probably never use the locker.

It doesn't matter how fast you're going or what you're packing in the taco, possibility of damage on trails is always possible.
