Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

Thanks for the clarification. All i know is it sucks ass when the compression cuts loose at 1300 rpms.

 

While they are at it, they will fix the Taco lean and howling rear diff with their tune...

 

And here I was thinking it was just a characteristic of the lower displacement engine.... Wouldn't fuel cut improve engine braking though?

 

Sub'd for further investigation. I really hope this is quite an aggressive tune. I personally love my truck but absolutely hate this tuning/stock map it runs on. Wether its the transmission or the motor don't care - looking forward to seeing some more "pep" out of this.

 

I have never had a tune on a vehicle I have owned, this is the first non domestic vehicle since 1982, so can someone explain what this tune will do and how is it installed? Thanks, I am not playing dumb or being a smart ass I just don't know.

 

Refines the fuel, spark, air inlet, transmission shift points.... blah blah blah in order to optimize power and the driving experience. It's more fine tuning than what the OEM may have done for various reasons. Sometimes, power and efficiency is left on the table and a tuner is attempting to fix that.

 

From a 60+ year old that has an excellent understanding of old tech. And just enough new tech to hurt himself and break things.

New tech vs old technology. Back in 82 engine upgrades were all done by physically changing mechanical parts. Like a bigger carb, better intake, different Cam, Headers, better exhaust system etc. Now adays everything is controlled by computer. Even your gas pedal is electronic with no direct mechanical conection to the engine. So any upgrades that actually make a difference, need to be done by modifying what the computer tells the engine to do when you step on the gas.

 

So due you have to take the truck to a shop to have it done or can it be done at home?

 

When you made those changes back in the day, you had to adjust the timing, timing advance, carb jetting to make the most of those changes. Tuning is doing those things, but the ECU (computer) actually controls more things..... like the throttle plate. The gas pedal used to be connected to the throttle plate of the carb and the throttle valve cable on the transmission.... today, that stuff is controlled by the ECU.

 

It's done both ways depending on what the vendor is doing. If the vendor is making a generic tune, it can be packaged/delivered by the owner at home. If it's being done for a specific car, then it may be done at a shop with a dyno.

I think the goal for OV Tune is to eventually have a package you can install yourself, maybe with a laptop. @OVTune would have to verify.
