Well guess what I was trying to say came out wrong. We in the Coast Guard do deal with gays where we work and I don't care. Most Coasties on land billets don't have to spend the night in the same room as their co-workers. However other services and even people on ships do, it is not close minded to want to be conformable sleeping. I'm not sure if others have been hit on by a gay person but it is weird if they wont leave you alone. A lot of the people think I'm saying segregate everything I'm not. If a person thinks that, then they are closed minded to think that a person can't have his own opinion on such a controversial issue. Cool if others want to be in the same room at night but many do not, and have no other choice because that what their unit demands. I agree that any person, if qualified can do a given task, but the "don't ask don't tell policy" is just fine with me. Not every person in this world needs to be politicly correct on every thing.

I love the whole, "Can a woman carry my 450 pound buddy and his 1,000 pounds of gear?"' argument. Let's just keep upping the weight until no one can do it.

I was in the Marines for 5 years and not once did I have to do that, outside of training. Even then, I didn't carry 360 pounds of man and gear.

The Mil. will have problems all branchs this argument will never go away until the gates open for all. We fought for years to keep women out of SF careers. Young enlisted men will get into trouble and some will be discharged for their actions. Before the crap starts I'm a retired First Shirt I have had these issues in my 21 year career.

    That's truely pathetic.

I thought the army was supposed to turn soldiers into honorable, mature, responsible, honest, & courageous individuals?? Americans put soldiers on a huge pedestal for their service and we're very thankful for it.

Soldiers who beat, haze, abuse, hurt, pick-on, kill or whatever.... don't deserve to be called soldiers and don't deserve to be *honored* with the rest of the soldiers. Those soldiers need to get their asses kicked to teach them how to be TRUE AMERICAN SOLDIERS!!

Others may feel differently, but I will never believe that people are born gay. They have the right to choose their sexual preference at any time and do. Why do you think so many come out of the closet after being married and having children for so many years?? Homosexuality is a learned behavior. Sure there are men that are born with more female traits just as there are women born with more masculine traits. Does this mean they are gay? Absolutely not. Homosexuality is a choice, not something you are born with and deserves no preferential treatment.

Ok, I have been following this post from the beginning with interest. I'm not gonna advocate one way or the other. I am not in the military, nor have I ever been in.
That said we must understand the mentality of the young men, and women who join. Especially the men. These guys, 18-21, many with high school educations have been brought up to believe certain things are not natural. Taking this a step farther, we have the college educated officers who have had more liberal learning on how we are equal, taught them by the colleges.
I'm not saying the young high school educated didn't get this, but they had many influences besides some teacher and in many cases the family members and peers held way more influence. Also, in high school, some issues are not discussed even today. Homosexuality is one of those.
Changing these young individuals must start at a young age, just as equality to all minority status (race, ethnicity, etc.), is more widely taught in today's schools. When everyone is onboard with this, then and only then will we see significant change in the mentality of our young (and older) men and women in the Armed Forces.

Making blanket statements about your outrage and how pathetic these fine young men and women are tends to show ignorance towards the Military in general.
    Just my thoughts. Ken

People get married and then realize they are not happy because of the social pressures to be straight and have the idyllic American family because of folks thinking the way you do. Gay the entire time and trying to talk themselves into being straight.

And you said it- No preferential treatment- so then who cares if they serve in the military.

I had a TON of pages to catch up cause I was at work overnight. and it seems that EVERYONE who is against this wants to label every gay as a super flaming cross dressing over-sexed individual who is going to recruit for homosexuality and do all sorts of dirty things to them while they sleep.

All the hetero folks in the military- People know they are hetro. When I had to tell my and my wife's commands that she was pregnant- They knew what we were doing....but we don't talk about it every day at work. Your personal relationships aren't really fodder for work discussion.

It's time to grow up and realize that no matter what you feel about homosexuality- It's a part of our society. And that if it's part of our society....then the gov't will get pressure to make the military the same. And if you are told to- You'll serve alongside a gay man or woman.

Some people will never believe the earth is round either. Doesn't make it any less true.

We are far beyond theory and well into fact on this matter. Your lack of understanding is simply a lack of awareness of the facts.

Imagine for a moment that you were born as you were to gay parents in a gay society. Would you still be attracted to women? Or do you think you would learn to be gay from a young age? What about if you were pressured into a gay relationship and then some hot broad hit on you after a couple of beers? Yeah, I thought so.

I am speaking from experience. I'm not saying it is right or wrong. I am saying that is what will happen. Once again FROM EXPERIENCE. You are arguing for how the world should be. I am telling you how the Infantry world is.

O yeah as far as Americans putting the military on a pedestal, i could care less because the mob is fickle. Just ask a Vietnam vet.

man i just couldn't stay away, this is a interesting debate. By the way what is a TRUE AMERICAN SOLDIER? Sounds like a boy scout to me
