Has anyone removed a transfer case from an automatic transmission truck?

The FSM says that you have to take off the trans too, but it doesn't look like that is necessary and I am hoping to aviod doing that.

Long story short I'm a dumb ass and need a new transfer case lol. I'm planning on getting a new one out of a wrecked truck and swapping it in.

I got a used Tom Wood's drive shaft, that it turns out was too long. It only only had about 1/4" of play in the slip yoke. So everytime I hit a bump or loaded my truck it compressed, pushing into the transfer case and wrecking the output bearing and who knows what else internally.

Toyota obviously won't warranty it, getting it rebuilt is gonna cost a lot. So I found some used for around $500 which sucks, but its gonna be the cheapest route

lol thanks. Modifying anything can have a pretty steep learning curve and sometimes it hurts in your wallet to find stuff out the hard way

I was crawling underneath my truck on Saturday replacing the ATF. I don't see why you'd have to pull the trans to get the transfer case out. I wasn't specifically looking at the t-case wondering if it could be done though so maybe I missed something obvious. The FSM tends to overdo it a bit. When I took out the headliner to do some work I read that section and it basically said take the entire interior out of the truck. With the wheel bearing it says take the whole upright out. I wouldn't be surprised to see them tell you to take the whole engine out to get the t-case out, honestly.

Go crawl under there and see what you're dealing with.

Yeah i've been looking at it too and I think that I can get it out without dropping the trans. I was just wondering if anyone has ever done it

not sure on taco's, but on the jeeps i have dropped t case's on. it helps get at the top t case bolt to loosen the crossmember and maybe a few trans bolts to let the tailshaft of the tranny clock down a bit. i will be droppin my first gen t case this weekend. to do a complete overhaul. i dont know how similar the job is between 1st and 2 nd gens but i will let ya know any problems during the process.

Not sure about toyota but a fsm for my old ford said to remove the transmission then remove tcase for work, definately wasnt the case, tcase came ot easily while trans was in the truck. Its definately worth trying to take the tcase off by itself since I'm sure it would take much less time if it works out.

Just a quick look at my Haynes manual instructs removing the TFC/Trans as an assembly. It says you may be able to remove TFC without the trans, but the trans may need to be lowered for clearance.
