I've fished NB several times over the years. It's a strange fishery but there are some pigs to be had :) and I saw the largest brown I've ever seen anywhere, bigger than most of the salmon and steelhead I've seen, chowing down on fresh stocked fingerlings lol
I'd focus on the upper CnR section
Park at "blue hole" and fish down
Savage is a cool river but I've never bought an MD license to fish it tho I have camped there a few times
Technical fishing with a decent chance at a big wild brown
The guy at the fly shop in deep creek will know what they're eating :) also u may consider booking a float trip on the nb, by far the best way to fish it

Took dad fishing this evening. He hasn't been in a couple years. He didn't want to use the fly rod, but whatever. He does what he wants. He caught a few. Missed a few. Lost a few. He had one to him that he lost right before I netted it that was about 17", and hung one that he said felt bigger, but we never saw it.

I only caught 3, 1 small one and these 2 fatties

The same shit everyone else has.
I was hoping you'd chime in with some info. A floats outta the question unfortunately ($$$). We're gonna do some exploring instead on foot.

I dont mind walking. A typical day of fishing usually involve about 6-10 miles of walking.

The Savage tailwater is supposed to be a world class wild brown fishery and everything above the reservoir is supposed to be stuffed with gemmies.

Probably gonna hit the tail water early Friday morning before it gets crowded and a gemmie stream or 2 Saturday

I managed to catch around 10 during the few hours of fishing today. Had a real monster break off and had lots of good fish spit the hook.

Anyone have a rod/reel combo suggestion for someone looking to get into fly fishing? I've used spinners my whole life and want to get into fly fishing now. Mainly for bass in lakes and trout/reds down in the bays

Something inexpensive if you're just getting into it. I've recommended the Orvis encounter setup to several people here at home just getting started. Usually $160 for a 9ft 5 wt, which is perfect for around here. Not sure what size you would need there.

If you're primarily targeting bass & reds (salt water?) - a 9ft 6wt setup should be fine. If saltwater - get a good reel that's designed for saltwater.

If you've never fly-fished - find a local fly shop and establish a relationship with them as they'll be in the best position to advise for the proper gear for your area/needs. Try and cast any setup you end up buying. And more importantly - take a casting lesson!

Yeah I was hoping to make it down to one of the Orvis shops for their free lessons and going from there.

I like the encounter, personally. I've used them. Seems like a really nice rod/reel set up for the money.

I suggest Redington or Orvis, not the entry level but the next one up. Clearwater and crosswater I believe. Not the encounter or path. The warranty was better one step up from entry level. Both can be had for less than 200 fully rigged min us the bugs. I got the Redington and have enjoyed it. I got my brother the Orvis he has not cast it yet but I used one last weekend and it was nice too

I'd go with the Orvis Clearwater. I started with one and I still use it more than my other rod. It loads easily and has a moderate action that is easy to learn with. For your needs you're probably looking at a 6wt or 7wt. Also comes with a 25 year guarantee that they will repair or replace your rod if it is broken for a relatively small fee. I believe the outfit is around $300 for rod, reel, line, and rod tube.

Yes NC, near the town of Spruce Pine. Fishing there was not realistic at all though.

Cabela's has some great combo's for a great price. I forget the brand, I picked up a 5 wt rod with I think an Echo reel. I like it better than my Orvis set up. I want to think it was around $70 for the whole thing.
