USB Outlet Wiring Question

I got a USB outlet from Cali Raised and want to wire it to my truck. Has a positive and negative wire that needs to be hooked up. So it takes 12v and converts it to 2.1A for the USB ports. My question is could I simply wire this to the cigarette lighter power and ground wires? I believe that already is 12v and would go and off with the truck.

 

Or would it be easier to simply use an Add a Circuit? Was thinking this so I could also add one to the left of my steering wheel to have to charge my phone because it's mounted to the lower grab handle.

 

You should be able to wire it to the cig lighter adapter that is indeed 12V. There should be plenty of amperage to power both.

No problem, should be a pretty easy install. I want to add one of these to the left of my steering wheel too, so if this works I'm going to get another, but I think on that side, using an add a circuit on a 12v fuse will be the easiest and safest.

Does anyone know which fuse has 12v on the fuse both behind the drivers's "coin storage?"

 

All of them are 12vdc. Some will be constant on, while others switch with the ignition.
I suggest you get a test light or cheap meter (HF has either for less than $10).

I cut the blue diodes out and sanded off the usb logos so it matched better.

 

Cool, when I add one by my steering wheel, I"ll go the add a fuse route like mentioned on your post. Gonna run out of room soon, I already have one add a fuse hooked up to my fog light switch.

Why did you cut the blue diodes out? Are they on all the time or only when it's plugged in? I hope it's the later.

The one by the stereo, I'm simply going to tap the cigarette lighter wires, this won't be drawing much to really mess with anything. Seems easier than having to run a wire from the fuse box and then find a ground. Plus it will already have a fuse and be linked to the ignition.

 

I wired it up to a switched circuit so it isn't on all of the time. At night the blue diodes were distracting to me so I disabled them.

 

So it's light up even without anything plugged into it?

 

I am pretty sure it lit up when it had power. hook it up to a 9v battery to do a quick test.

Whats a good fuse to tap for this outlet? Something in the box in the cab.

 

If you have an access cab, use 1 of the rear door power window fuses. Yes, they put 4 power window fuses in the access cab.

 

A few more things about the PW fuses.

They even run wires from the fuses to the kick panels.

The power windows stay active for 30secondsish after you turn the key off, so don't freak out when your new circuit doesn't turn off right away.

Before someone says, "The drivers door lockout switch will disable your new circuit", no it won't. The lockout switch disconnects the ground circuit.
