Oil Filter Change

Hello, I am new to the group and haven't been able to find this question being asked, so forgive me if I missed this discussion.

I am looking to see if anyone has changed out the Stock Oil filter to something a little bigger. Stock Oil Filter is a FRAM PH3614 or WIX 51348. Both of which I feel is too small. What I would like to do is switch over to a FRAM PH8A or WIX 51515.

What I am wondering is (sense they are both the same thread and inlet size), has anyone tried just screwing the bigger filter onto the filter mount. I don't know about o-ring size difference, but was wondering if anybody has tried this before?

My backup plan is to use a remote Oil filter mount. I was just wondering if I could do a direct switch or if anyone has tried this before.

I have the 4.0L V6 engine. Any thoughts

If you get an OEM Toyota filter it will be taller than the aftermarket size. Get a pack of 6 and you'll save some money per filter

 

Why would size of the filter matter?

More filter element to collect particulate, as my Dad and Grandpa say.

My real reason, is am trying to reduce the number of Oil filters I need to keep on hand. I figure going in oil filter size is the best way. Increase oil capacity, more time to cool the oil to cool and in theory Longer life in an engine. Maybe increase the interval that I have to change the oil if the Oil and filter are still good.

I currently change my oil about every 5 to 6 weeks, that is about when my filter bypass opens by my best estimates and numbers.

 

An oil change every six weeks seems excessive. You know the interval is longer than that right?

 

Quality of the filter matters more than the size in my opinion.

 

I think Quality and size if I can have both, but I usually go for Quality if I have to chose between the two

You figure wrong. More filter doesn't necessarily mean better quality filter overall. Size really has nothing to do with that.

If you want to extend your OCI first step is to run a high quality synthetic oil. Conventional won't get you past 5k miles magical filter or not. Then run the oil filter paired with the oil you pick and replace per the manufacturers instructions.

Amesoil can get you to 25k miles with two filters. Mobil 1 just released an annual protection that is rated for 20k miles with 1 filter. I am currently testing the Mobil 1 Annual Protection. Will have the oil tested by Blackstone labs at 15k to determine if its got life for more miles.

The science has been done on this so no need to make assumptions or guesses. I recommend bobistheoilguy.com for a reference.

Another option is Wix 51516 - longer than the 51348, a little shorter than the 51515. Same specs on all 3 for Bypass valve, all have anti-drainback valve.

 

your filter bypass is not opening, ever, unless the filter is defective

if you had that much crap in your motor, to clog the filter and
force the bypass to open...you'd have major symptoms of engine damage
by now....


OEM filter is more than enough to filter that engine if you change oil and filter every 5 thousand miles,
or every 10,000 if using 100% synthetic

 

OP - how many miles between oil changes in 5-6 weeks?

 

Usually 3700 to 4500.

 

Switch to synthetic and run to 10k. A higher quality oil and filter and you might be able to go longer. The quicker you put on miles (and the more highway miles) the more likely you can extend that OCI.

Thanks for the Info, that is something I didn't know. I have been running Sync, wasn't aware that some of them would last over 10K miles. I will have to check in and do a little research on that.

@ 127.0.0.1 I change the oil when I get aproch the 1 MPG lose. I usually make about 19.5ish MPG when I usually stay their for 4 - 5 weeks, then a loose about 0.75 to 1 MPG over one filling. I have checked and held out for several tanks to verify that it isn't just the driving I am doing/load I am moving. When I change the oil, I go back up to the 19.5ish That is the only thing I have figured. Testing the idea that changing the Oil filter is the key thing currently. That has made the difference in the past. I am creeping up on the 5th week. Thinking of checking to see if a bigger filter makes a difference or not is my next step, which brings me to my question that was asked at the begining.

Wonder if the slightly used (dirty) oil affects the VVT-i, and gas MPG suffers?

 

Wow, changing oil every few weeks is insane..... you must have a lot of time on your hands
