Nice. Mine seem to be holding up ok, but we'll see how it goes.

Interesting that you guys needed to massage up top more. I wonder if it will be an issue for me when I go to aftermarket uca's.

In my 96 4runner my 1.5" body lift helped me clear the upper part of fender when test fitting 35s.

I also run spc ucas set all the way forward for negative caster. Then maxed lcas for most positive caster. I netted 1.7* caster but can completely clear 35s turning lock to lock on the street. Offroad is another story.

I'm running a 1" body lift, for what little it's worth.

We have to do it because one would have to limit up travel to avoid hitting the fenders at full stuff. No one wants to limit up travel. Do this on a jump or large drop off and your entire fender is bent.

The body lift is a good way to gain clearance without raising center of gravity. A 2" suspension lift with a 3" body lift and major flex can do really well on the trail. COG stays low and planted.

Yes you are correct but COG is not raised much when a body is lifted 1". You have a heavy motor, frame, axles under you with a big empty box on top. The empty box will not affect COG as much as the frame, motor, trans and axles. That extra 1.5" of body lift will help you avoid a lot of work when trying to fit 35"s.

I guess I look at it that way but I understand what your saying also.

True but for many of the builds up here you are raising that COG with a RTT and bed rack as well, or with a 4Runner there is so much more mass that's part of the cab regardless so you are raising COG quite a bit with BL. So much better to cut and tub to keep it as low and wide as possible.

Glad to see that it isn't just a black and white argument here regarding body lifts. It's always nice to see discussions avoid devolving into dogma and ignorance.

Like a lot of things, a body lift isn't all bad or all good. It depends entirely on the application of the lift in question. We can most likely agree that we're not advocating or even talking about throwing a 3" BL on top of a 6" drop bracket lift with maxed out CO preload.

More likely, were talking about a 1-1.5" BL over a reasonably set up CO lift. In my case, I'm running a 1" BL along with a CO lift set to just over 2" after settling. Among the many reasons I chose to use a BL were the fact that I could gain a margin of clearance over what I had already cut out during tubbing, as well as gain that clearance independent of my suspension. Because the range of motion of an IFS suspension is what it is regardless of the 'lift'. That means I don't have to get super crazy hacking much beyond my firewall, and that I don't have to limit my bump travel to keep from eating my fenders.

But I'm also reducing the height of my bed rack, as well as purposefully and strategically distributing the bigger masses like the batteries and spare tire, which also affect the tipping angle. I would have done these things regardless of whether I ran a BL or not, but when it's all said and done, I think it will work just fine. If it doesn't, I'll figure out another approach and change things accordingly.

I don't think the question is whether a body lift is impractical or not, I was more so just pointing out that, after some light research online, a body lift seems to be the norm among runners and 35s. Personally, I don't have one on my rig. Doesn't mean it doesn't work for the next guy (Jason case in point).

Didn't take it that way at all, and I apologize if I came off as a dick. I just figured I'd share my reasoning for running one, since in general, they kinda get shat on here as a whole rather than taking into account the intent.

And if it's typical on the T4Rs, then that tells me the fender shape has to be at least a little different than the Tacos. That's interesting.

You're not a dick, no worries. I've been reading through the discussion intermittently and just wanted to elaborate a bit on my initial post regarding a body lift.

Isn't a crawl box also on your list? Another big reason a body lift will help you out. Just like with a ton of this stuff, it all comes down to personal preference. We all build our rigs to cater our wants and needs, if we all did the same thing all the time this would be a much less interesting hobby.

HAHA. This is true. Driving a lifted tacoma you will get every tacoma owner giving you thumbs up and props as you drive by.

Its very rare a soccer mom in a 4runner even looks at my 3rd gen. Most just say "WHAT AN IDIOT FOR DOING THAT TO HIS SOCCER MOM SUV".

But man its so much easier maneuvering a soccer mom SUV on the trail than it is to move that tacoma around. Thats for sure.

    Exactly, brother.

I love this site, but sometimes it seems like if you don't follow some TW-approved build template, you're lame. That's sad.

After going to the meet at Toytec this weekend, one of the things I really enjoyed was seeing the diversity with all of the builds. Same basic platform, but totally individual in the execution.
