But really, it depends on budget considering the front needs to be re-geared as well.
When just replacing the carrier (where the spider gears are housed) you still need to set up the gear lash with shims to get your .004-.007 backlash. But considerably less time and money than a re-gear.

I had a feeling that would be your answer. Gives me something to think about. I'd love to do a re gear, but then I 1) cannot use my 4x4 2) have to break into the front and multiply the repair cost by 1,000,000,000.

At least replacing the carrier with something more solid and keeping the current gear ratio would prevent further issues and give me a locked rear until I budget to do the front as well. Thanks for your help! Things to think about.

Edit: Something tells me I am going to have to have the backlash measured even if I just replaced the spider gear setup? Same amount of time/labor costs.

If you use the same carrier you wont necessarily, but I always confirm its within spec. If a new carrier then absolutely yes.
Go ARB! Might as well take this opportunity to lock it. If not you will wish you did...

Having a locker will reduce the wear on your drive train. It will actually let you crawl, and not power through obstacles

Oh I'm convinced about getting one. You saw this weekend that it would help out a ton. Just trying to justify the purchase as it wasn't planned to be so early. Haha

Plus the bumper and bedside issue. That even bummed me out

Well it's been awhile since i've made a progress post so here are some of the most recent actions made.

Picked up my @Pelfreybilt bolt on sliders and worked on the install a few weeks ago. I bought them bare as I expect them to get all scratched up and I could just make some touch up spots to them instead. I used a base primer and then hit 2 layers of Dupli-Color Truck Bed Coating for the finish.

Fast forward a few weeks and I'm awaiting the arrival of my third member. I ran the numbers from pretty much every angle possible and decided to hit the "f it" button and get a third member from East Coast Gear Supply. Huge shoutout to Kurtis, Chase and John from @ECGS as they were all great to work with and very helpful and patient through this process. They understood the situation and helped me through all my worries to make the best decision.

I made lots of calls and different approaches from friends in the industry and local shops. ECGS beat them all and still offered the best route for me to go! I decided to just make the move to 4:56s with an ARB locker as that is what I wanted to do in the future anyway. I realize I will need to re-gear the front, but at least I wont be double spending in the long run. They are also sending me a CKMA12 high output compressor so I can do the entire instal and be able to air up my tires. With 4:56s I'm expecting to need to make the jump to 33"s soon but I need to get the truck back on the road first.

So I was planning using the Slee Off Road compressor mount for the install, as the price is nice and it comes powder coated. unless anyone has another option or inputs for the HO compressor?

I was also looking further into the setup and I'm not sure if I'd need the manifold as well? Didn't have too much time to read into it but I know the manifold gives you more options to plug in accessories, but would I be able to run a rear locker and an air source without it?

Which compressor, single or dual? The single comes with a 3 outlet manifold, the dual you have to buy the manifold.

It's the single. The high output version so I can air up tires. Not the twin though. A 3 outlet is all I need. One for the front, rear, and he air line. Thanks!

The HO version has the 3 outlet manifold. The main outlet is 1/4" NPT and has a dustcap in it. The other two outlets are plugged and they're 1/8" BSPP.

I was going to look into a stereo for the GTI. I want to get the touchscreen so I can throw a back up camera in so I'm down as well.

I don't know if you have read it, but @jberry813 thread has a good conversation about that.
