Anyone else's paint starting to fail like mine ? This is on an 08 PreRunner DC. It has lived outside in Florida its whole life. The hood and roof are really failing bad. The failing clearcoat on the hood looks like a pissed off cat stopped by.

I live in Tampa and mine is garaged and in good shape. I know that I read that the Florida area we live in is the worst place in the U.S. for car paint. I am not surprised to see yours like that if it has always been outside in Florida.

How often did you wax it? That's not uncommon in So Cal either if the finish isn't maintained

I'm big on keeping the truck looking good. It got waxed on the average twice a year but the sun here in FL is brutal on paint. Sucks.....

My 05 looks very similar, but it's harder to see with the white. It has been kept outside in Orlando it's whole life and rarely waxed. It essentially looks like I have a matte white paint job. Think I am just going to do a full wrap sometime soon.

    Normal.

My '04 is done. It's a reason I went white on my '13. No clearcoat to fret over.

My 05 still shines like new. I keep her in the garage and out of the ridiculous (AZ) sun.

looks similar to my 06's paint and it spent most of it's life out in the AZ sun, was one of the reasons I decided to sell that truck and get a white one.

The white paint is not clearcoated on Tacomas so there is no clearcoat to fail.

Just a bunch of old crap
My Indigo's clearcoat on my '06 went south about a year and a half ago. I wheel it a lot so it's dirty all the time and it sits out in the AZ sun. I'm getting ready to color match bedliner coat it anyways so I don't have to worry about it ever again.

Do the black Tacoma's have clearcoat? Not the Black Sand Pearl (I know those do) I mean straight black.

I don't believe that is correct. Mine has white paint and is clearcoated.

Single stage paints are very rare nowadays, especially with assembly line painting where everything goes through the same processes.

OP - If you keep your vehicles outdoors, get a car port or keep them waxed and polished. Neglect is the issue here, not a factory defect.

I don't know of any vehicle made in the last two decades that doesn't have clear coat. It's very easy to test it, simply take a rag with a small amount of polishing compound, if the color comes off on the rag it's single stage paint, if it doesn't it's base/clear.

The paint is not failing, you are failing to take care of your paint.

You are leaving the truck parked in the sun all day without adequate washing and paint protection techniques (ie waxes and sealers)

Take the truck to a professional detailer for them to look at. If the clear coat hazing is not through and through you likely can resolve this with wet sanding. If the damage does go all the way though the clear coat then you'll need to repaint the panels. I would look into Line-x on the roof as a solution. Will be cheaper than repainting and will require no maintinence on your part. You could do the hood that way too but might not be a look for everyone lol.

UV rays cause damage to everything, so it's critical to use protection on those parts exposed to it regularly.

White Tacomas don't have a clear coat, they are a single stage paint and it's far from the only one.

I had a 2012 white tacoma. I cannot verify the clearcoat, but I parked in the same spot/direction for 5 years with it in Socal. I noticed on the door where sun would reflect off the door mirrors the paint was turning a light yellow.

From now own I close the mirrors hahahaha.

OP, it really is maintenance. UV is hard on everything. Being in a sunny state does not help either. I try to do a complete wax job on my vehicle every 6 months if not a year.
