True but they did lost their goaltender (who is their best player) for like 90% of the season.

Word is McDavid is going to get 13.25M / 8yrs. Yikes. I mean he's a beast but that is like maxed out big time.

I'll take Sid at 8.7M thanks.

I was hoping he'd take 9.7 a year so the team can afford some better help. He must be confident he can win with a lesser team behind him.

Right, that was sort of what I was expecting. I'm not knocking him. He is dynamic, the next face of the league probably etc. He deserves to max out if he chooses. But by no means is that helping build the team. But that is just 1 more thing I have to give Sid props for. There is always huge pressure for the players to go max deal and when a mega-star takes a discount to help build the team, I give them a ton of respect for it.

From what I've heard the Oilers have agreed to pay McDavid the league maximum on a maximum term contract. The sticking point is what happens if there is a lockout in 2020. The Oilers want a clause that will let them back out of the deal and renegotiate while still holding his rights since any change in the CBA might leave the Oilers screwed on such a huge deal. McDavids agent wants to work out an adjustment formula that would pretty much increase McDavid's salary no matter what happens in 2020 if there is a lockout.

Personal opinion, McDavid isn't worth 13 million dollars. Yes, I know he might be the Hart winner for the next decade or so, but for 13 million you could have Johnny Gaudreau AND Sean Monahan. No matter what McDavid does he will never be able to split himself into two threats and if the Oil pay him 13 million he will be 17.3% of their cap space alone. Great players need good line mates and I think the Oilers are assuming they will always be able to find a league minimum player in the minors or someone out of college to play well with McDavid. That's an extremely stupid idea in my opinion.

Oh ya? That is pretty crazy. Didn't know something like that could be implemented into a contract.

I'm hoping when Matthews gets a deal next year he values the team over himself. From what we've heard from him he loves the team of youngsters he plays with, hopefully they will all take a combined deal that builds a solid core without killing the teams chances like McDavid is doing.

Neither did I but both SN and TSN in Canada have articles stating that.

I agree. What do you expect from Auston? Let's say he scores 40 again. Plus his 2-way play is outstanding for a player his age. Not saying he brings more to the table than McDavid, you can't go wrong with either guy. But do you expect him to be about 10m?

Edit: You beat me to it lol.

Will McDavid's greed be the downfall of Edmonton after stockpiling #1 picks for so long?

It's also being reported that McDavid originally asked for a 5 year 11 million contract but the Oilers said no. The Oil want a max term deal likely because if they figure McDavid is there only shot at a cup and they'd rather have that shot for 8 years. Plus if the economy gets better maybe a max deal is 20 million in 5 years somehow and then McDavid would ask for that. McDavid and his agent have decided that it'll cost the Oilers 13.75 million a year if they want him for 3 more years.

If the cap goes up, the Oil won't be in a completely terrible spot. But seeing as how it hasn't really climbed, I wouldn't bank on them getting a ton of room from that, in the future. But ya, I can see both sides and I don't think either the team or player made a bad move. But if I was a Oiler faithful (or even teammate), I'd rather see him not totally max out.

I hate to keep bringing Sid (or the Pens) into the equation but just as an example...I think Sid's willingness to sign for a discount helps create the culture around here. You don't have dudes rolling into PGH thinking they are sweet or wanting to make the most bank. How could you, when you have 87 in the room taking less$? I think it helps on so many levels, with team attitude, potential free-agents and being able to stack your team. So that is a bit of a disappointment for Oiler fans.

Ya if Sid didn't sign for less who would have been missing from this year's line up? Malkin? Kessel? Would they have won missing one of those pieces if Sid wanted the max at the time?

Edit: I don't doubt they could have just saying. If I was Conner is be willing to go without a mill or two to make the team better. Just do a few more commercials.

When Sid signed his deal, both him and Geno probably could've maxed out around 11-12ish, given the ceiling? Correct me if I am wrong there, but just my guess. Based off of the Toews / Kane deals were were tops in the league (but I don't think were max cap hit) and around the same timing, it has to be around there. Plus Ovi got over 10M around there also. But Sid hits at 8.7 and Geno is I think 9.5M. So granted it didn't save a ton but it is something Probably buys you an extra 5Mil or so. When you are trying to squeeze guys like Letang, Kessel etc on the team as part of your core, every dollar counts. Plus Schultz took less on a low-term deal to stay, which has happened for a few guys (Cullen). It's almost like Sid sets the example and others follow. Any free agent coming here knows up front that you take less, but it has to be worth it. It's an awesome organization.
