You'd need to get a "charging case." basically a case that plugs into your lightning port and supports Qi charging.

Ugh... I don't like cases. Is there anything I can keep in the truck and just plug in or attach to the phone that will allow it to charge?

Charging pad works with some Droids, not iPhones, although there are rumors that future iPhones may support wireless charging. It's slower than a standard USB-port charge anyway, so unless you want to get some odd case or auxilliary device that sticks to the back of your phone and into the charging port (and I know damned well I don't want to mess with that), just use a cord and charge your phone the way god intended......

The wireless charger is slow and heats up the phone a lot. I could barely get a charge with music and GPS running at the same time. I stopped using mine and just use a usb and 12v charger now.

I don't have a third gen, or an iphone for that matter. When I did have an iphone, it charged fine using the USB port. For my android I use a 12v plug in charger.

If its proprietary, I'm going to get a droid. No headphone jack is bad enough.

Knowing Apple it'll be their proprietary wireless charging instead of the industry accepted one currently in use

Apple is to adopt the industry standard same as Samsung. There has already been a few leaks regarding it on the internet. The material changes to the new phone fall in line with the materials required to do wireless charging.

Mophie case for Iphone 7 adds wireless charging capability and doubles as an extra battery for your phone too. I hated cases before but I love this one.
