Last fall we heard this horrible sound like a giant baby was being run over. Looked out the back window to see a dark grey mountain lion about the size of a German shepherd across the creek...never went to see what it killed as they tend to keep an eye on their recent kills. Still gives me the creeps to think that thing is around here somewhere.

but like I said no small rodents

Family of five of these in my backyard... rodents, skunks, opossums all mia for some reason.

It was all fun and games until mommy and daddy started teaching the pups to hunt. Usually foxes eat 100% of their kill. Except during teaching. Then they leave half eaten carcasses in the yard for my puppy. That really sucked and my first indoctrination into the phenomenon was the leftover skunk tail. :puke:

Truck news aside, I caught 8 mice this year alone in the garage. One a day for a week straight then caught the 8th about a week later without any bait, just the traps placed in key locations. I couldn't believe how fast they were falling. Little bastards were causing serious havoc in there, so I had to take additional measures in sealing the side entrance door. Haven't had a peep of them since.

If my job doesn't work out at least I know I have a calling in pest extermination. :D

That just freaked me the hell out. It looked like it was almost like a scary movie more than a documentary.

In my last job we had buildings in random remote locations and problems with mice/rats. My employer would only buy poison for some reason.

Anyway the poison doesn't kill right away so they'd get back to their nest and die... in the wall. Smelled like death for a week usually.

Traps are a much much better solution IMO.

The sticky traps are not all that great either. If the rat or mouse is determined enough to survive they have been known to chew off their own limb just to get free. Then you have an injured bleeding vermin running around. Poison is horrible for the reasons you wrote about also. It takes time to kill them and usually they are able to get somewhere hidden prior to dying. Either you trap them immediately to kill them so you know where they are and all you have to do is check the trap when you remember, or you suffer with the atrocious stench of death for a week, and the possibility of inviting other pests and even their own kind to come and eat the dead carcass. Yuck.

So much fun fishing dead mice out of remote locations in your attic or walls. Poison is the WORST possible solution.

I bet what you heard was a rabbit screaming, while being killed by the cat.... Rabbits do sound like a baby screaming, while they are being killed. (I've killed rabbits NOT babies....well at least not yet)...hehe

What I've been doing for the mice thing in the truck is I have Corrosion Free applied every year, to prevent rust. It can be applied to wiring without worry of shorting out things, so I get a spray can and spray all the exposed wires that the body spray did not get, like under the hood.. I'm sure they don't like to eat that stuff..... Never had a problem in 27 yrs of doing this.!! A can of Rust Check, or fluid film would likely do it also...

    all tore up already
The sound a fisher makes is also terrifying. More like young child being tortured though. If you never heard their screams before i apoligize for any future nightmares
