Really considering Locker but need opinions

Alright well i wanna first start off by saying thanks to everyone who has helped me with the locker info and telling me what i may need n some pointers. BUT im still iffy.. ive heard ppl say goods and ppl say bads.. I want to know what you guys think. Should i throw a 300 locker into a 03 tacoma prerunner 4cyl. what will i gain, will i loose anything? do i need to worry about balding tires extremely fast? etc. Thank you!

Is the "300" Locker a full time locker? I tried googling it but didn't come up with anything

so like a powertrax locker will not be good.. see thats the thing i dont have 1k to drop on a locker.. is a perminant locker bad like powertrax?

it sounds like a locker thats always locked such as powertrax is not the route to go.. all i hear is the on demand lockers like on and off... i dont have that much cha ching to drop into that.. Would anyone! recommend a locker thats always locked? is it really that bad...

 

I dont think I would use one in my daily driver. If i had a trail rig and needed a cheap locker, then yes I would use it in that case

 

its just not that safe, man. That's why they make selectable ones.

 

so your saying.. a selectable locker is good obviously! but i dont got that kinda money... so the non selectable locker is NOT good for a daily drive / mudd every weekend?

 

Im in the process of putting a locker into my 05 prerunner and I would definitely say go for it but if possible go for a selectable locker. The down side to a full time locker would be you're rear tires will always be spinning at the same speed, an open differential like what you have right now gives more power to the wheel with the least amount of traction which allows you to corner better for street driving. A fully locked differential will wear out your tires faster, I don't know how much faster but it will probably be noticeable. The down side of a selectable locker is the price, an ARB setup like what I'm doing will run you about 1200 installed. This however allows for completely normal street driving but when you want to use it off road you can you can flip a switch and it'll lock up for you. Besides the price there are no other down sides to the ARB, plus you get a compressor that will allow you to air up after off roading (if you get the bigger one). If you do it your 2 wheel drive will be a lot more capable off road.
