Front diff. I'd like a rear locker but lsd has been good so far.
I think my center locker is not fully engaging though.

I would aim for the Alpine Loop- either Lake City, Silverton, Ouray but be prepared for mass amount of folks out too (4th of July weekend).

Stay away from Mineral Creek (Ouray to Engineer Pass) they had an avalanche this winter and whereas they say it's open it is even more sketchy then previously in that section.

Maybe one of the guys living out there will add a first hand account to this.

Closed, had a slide a couple weeks ago. I ran the whole loop last week, have to start and return to silverton or lake city.

That's accurate, Road closed signs at both ends of mineral creek road. So the Ouray side of Engineer pass trail is closed and well marked to not take that road.

So then the question is, for those with built enough rigs to do it, can you get to Poughkeepsie from lower or upper Mineral and use it to bypass the slide? And the other alternative to going out through Silverton is taking California/Hurricane/Corkscrew out from Animas. But that wouldn't be a faster way to get to Ouray, just more scenic.

    Hello fellas,
I'm planning to take a trip to SW Colorado to Ouray, Telluride, lake city, in October. Never done anything like that before, but how is the camping? Is it primitive? Or do you need a permit or pay something? My understanding was it was all public land. Everything in Texas is private, so there really isn't any off the grip camping here. Also will there be any snow at that time? Maybe only on the top of mountains? Thanks in advance for any help. Sorry if this has already been discussed here.

in October I would expect to see snow...I've been caught in a 2ft storm down there in September

a lot of the prime trails might be closed at that time...

keep an eye on bushducks, http://bushducks.com/tripreps/passopen.htm

So Oct is basically winter there and most camping sites close by the 15th, passes and trails close as soon as snow doesn't melt off.

Push it up to Sept and get Fall colors in with Snow, etc.
