This past week I just noticed my shifter (automatic) can rotate either clockwise or counter clock wise. Should I be able to turn it at all?

To tighten, grab the silver 'ring' portion right under the knob and pull it down, it will unclick. Turn your shifter until it's tight in the correct orientation then push the silver 'ring' up until it clicks and locks in.

how'd you get the boot loose?

mine moves too and I tried tightening it a bit more but noticed it moved the boot with it, was worried it would damage

    Read above. Haha.

I did that to mine in the first week because it was driving me crazy. Pulled the silver ring down and gave it I think two turns. Someone was slacking.

The boot slides down, just grab the chrome ring and slide down. Its just clipped. Rotate shifter knob and then pull boot up.

I actually like that mine moves a bit. It helps line up with my hand when I put it on the shifter. each his own I guess.

Dealers often take the shifter knob while it's on the lot so no one steals them. Guess that's a huge thing. When I test drive a 14 Camery a few years ago, all the knob's were removed from the cars. Asked why? Theft.

Damn Toyota! I have a 2019 with only 4991 miles on it and this is still happening and I’m already having to do repairs like this! I slid the chrome ring down on my automatic shifter boot, rotated the knob one turn until tight, and slid the chrome ring back up. All fixed now, but that’s 15 seconds of my life l’ll never get back!

Thanks for the advice, TW is great for that. And I love this truck! :D
