I drove a 1993 Xcab LB Toyota 5sp 2WD truck for 9 years and sold a few years ago. Now I want another one but I won't settle for what I had. Now there are too many options now.

I've settled on a 2003 or 2004 4WD TRD but they are hard to find with low mileage and a 5 speed manual. I like the idea of a timing chain's durability and in a 2.7 with 150 hp would do all I need. My 93 only had like 110 hp.

I've found a 2004 4wd, TRD, V6, Auto, XCAB with 60,000 miles with leather that is clean as a pin. I could live with an auto.

Tell me what to do. I just don't trust Automatic transmissions Plus you can't push them off.

Does the 2004 4 speed tranny have a way to fill and check the fluid?

Toyota is doing some very bad things IMO. Engines w/o timing chains and Trannys that you can't check and fill.

 

Ummm, I am on my second, 2nd Gen. Tacoma (2005, 2010) and it is chain drive (v-6) and automatic... sweet driving... the tranny contains synthetic oil that is good for 100,000 miles, no need to get to it... and my 2005 was changed... then and I traded it in 2,000 miles later for the 2010.

My earlier 2001 was belt drive timing and that was replaced at 90,000 miles on schedule, never failed... Put 136,000 miles on it before trading to the 2005.

welcome to TW. i dont see anything wrong with an auto trans. they are more forgiving on the rest of the powertrain imo. but you cant push start them like a stick. ford didnt think that 1 over well enough when they came out with the heated tailgates. lmao. should've been a option for stick trans only imho. but really i just swapped my starter at 100k plus miles why else would ya need to push start it?

 

In the 2005's that would be the 4.0's they may have a chain. The 3.4's are what I'm talking about. They have a belt.

I'm sticking with the older model 1st gens 2003 and 2004's.

Also I found a 2003 4X4, XCAB, 2.7, 5sp with only 62k miles on it. I'm going to pick it up next week. The only thing is it's not a TRD but i'm staying out of the woods with it so it should be fine.
