Any of you idiots ever done a valve cover gasket replacement? I tightened my valve cover bolts a few weekends ago and now I've got a terrible burning oil smell, so I'm gonna change out the gaskets this weekend. I heard it's easy, but it just takes forever.

Hey Zack, I've replaced valve cover gaskets on other engines, but not the 3.4 that's in your truck. Either way, getting the mating surfaces clean, with oil, grit, and old gasket removed is crucial. I've seen metal burrs on the heads that will eventually allow oil to seep. Use a small file and remove any imperfections. Take pictures before you get started and do one side at a time to minimize chaos. A torque wrench is a very good tool to have. Valve cover gaskets don't like too much squeeze.

YouTube is your friend! I've helped my dad on the 3.slow which is just about the same engine. But I need to change mine as well as I have a slow leak from mine. But that's for when I have a DD and don't care about leaving the truck apart

Thanks! I found out the torque thing the hard way. After smelling burnt oil about a year ago, I tightened them and it fixed it. It wasn't until tightening them this time that I think I tightened too much and the gasket finally gave. Truck is 14 years old, though, so it's long overdue. Also, I'm going to take this opportunity to clean my engine bay of all the old grease and oil, too, so hopefully it won't look so shitty.

Already found one I'm gonna follow! Only difference is this guy doesn't have a supercharger, but how hard can that be to remove!?
