Has anyone replaced the rack and pinion , if so what brand did you go with and any call outs on replacing it . It seem straight forward but you never know ....thanks in advance

Raise the front of the truck up. Undo the ball joints from the spindle. Take the high and low pressure lines off on the drive side of the rack. Undo the steering shaft. Next take the driver inner off. Then loosen the two bolts that hold the rack in. Push them up high as possible and use a hack saw to cut the heads off (4cyl can remove bolts without this step). Take the front two bolts out of the front diff. Remove the passenger side coilover and then slide the rack towards the passenger side of the truck until the driver side can be slid out of the front cross member.

Also remember to keep your steering wheel straight through the entire process or you will end up destroying your clock spring.

Wheelin, I have no doubts. Its always that "prepared" shit that gets me. Always rush down there. Picked up a fold out chair so Gideon can quit bringing one for me and making me feel stupid. Got my tent from my last LBL trip. Bought a air mattress and pump.

Whats with cutting bolt heads off?

Went and tried to look under mine (raining), looks like front diff is in the way?

 

I don't know why but Toyota claims you have to either pull the motor or loosen the motor mounts and loft the front of the motor to get the bolts out because of the length. I found it easier to cut the heads off and dropping them through and get new bolts.
