Again, let me know when you find a source. You don't know it's not the entire budget amount. Fair enough, I don't known it is the entire budget amount. In my opinion it is.

Just as you have a lot of opinions on the 3rd gen but in fact do not actually own one.

Again, it's just your opinion on the information you provide based on anecdotal information gleaned from your "research".

    Wow...

A bunch of people at Toyota America are probably losing their jobs over this. 228 recall over what appears to be an assembly blunder.

I wouldn't expect probably more than a handful or 10 at most. How many people do you think would be directly responsible for calibrating the robot / tools for the two assembly plants, especially when you have two separate torque specs for the differentials.

My honest guess would be the few who were supposed to check and didn't were fired and the rest have gone through additional training and another Q/A step has been implemented.

Um, that's a big fat no. Not a senior position and if he only has a $2.5M budget then that's like being the #2 screw thread specialist. When I was a chief engineer many moons ago for a much smaller OEM my R&D budget was $18M. Our company would be a pimple on Toyota's ass lol.

This thread was about the gen3 lack of "bottom end" power. Nobody is suggesting the engine is no good or unreliable or junk. We all love the Tacoma as much as anyone of you. All they need to do is retune it so when you stomp it... it goes now! If I have a mac truck heading at me I want to move! Not that this happens very often but better to have and not need than need and not have. There is no reason to sacrifice power when I want it for economy when I want it. My sienna van with the 2gr has great bottom end power and great economy as well.

As an actual 3rd gen owner, I really can’t relate to the ppl who constantly complain about the
lack of low end torque. And a lot of the complainers about the 3rd gen don’t even own one so how would they even know?

Mine runs like a bat out of hell in “D” (fuel economy mode) and I can actually spin my big ass 17X8” wheels until the trak control kicks in and spoils everything.
Just the other day I got off the interstate after doing 80+mph to get gas and as the traffic was heavy getting back on the ascending road, I saw a small opening and I mashed on it and it just roared to life!
Afterwards I ran into a red light and when I step on it just JUMPED and I said geez, slow it down lol!
But I gather that It anticipated my need for speed!

So yeah sorry I can’t relate, but my MAF is good, CPS is working right on, and I use top-tier regular fuel. I don’t need any more I’ve got plenty!

And as for a supercharger to help things along, I don’t need it and I wouldn’t get it.

When I need to pass a slow pow, I just mash it and it just roars like a lion and heads turn. Oh what a thrill! I love it!
If you actually own a 3rd gen and want to go even faster, all you do is slide to “S” mode and you’re gone!
My 3rd gen knows my driving habits well at 22k+ so much so that I don’t even use ECT anymore, but it’s there if I want to turn on the afterburners and go crazy.
But full disclosure, I have the stock suspension 4X4 with factory stock size tires /265/65/17.

Now go and get you an awesome, bad ass 3rd gen 3.5 V-6 and have some FuN!

    Cheers!

Test drove it. Upon mashing the pedal... all it could muster was... Blaaah. I took it back and bought a 13. I'm not shitting you! It was fucking gutless of the start. If it was as you described.. I'd be driving one now!

Mine is pretty much as Hammer described, after 18 months I threw it in ECT just to see how bad of a hit the gas mileage would be and was surprised to feel the throttle felt like a hair trigger, quick response immediately on demand.

Did you happen to try either that or S mode during your test drive? Makes a bit of a difference.

Your test drive might have had a faulty cps sensor or old gas.
I test drove a sporty GM in '08 and it was lackluster during the drive. When I picked up the next day, I drove it again and it was a totally different vehicle.
When I asked the sales guy if they had done anything to it, he said they had cleaned it & filled it up for me, as it was on "E" when I had driven it. I ended up buying it!

Something that simple would have denied me some FuN, as it was a kick in the ass-car for the first 2 years before I got disgusted with recalls and problems.

    Hope that helps!
    Cheers!

I believe S mode affects shift points. Does the S mode open the butterfly all the way when you mash it? Or is the computer regulating your launch?

I believe the "S" just affects the shift points, but I could be wrong. It should bypass the regular "D" mode, it does on mine.

S mode also affects throttle. Dunno about the last part of your question. However, since that doesn't stop others from posting unknowns as facts, I say yes. It opens the butterflies 178% when you mash it.

S4 will limit it to a 4 speed through the Rev range so I imagine those shift points are held alot longer. Not sure how the electronic throttle and TC might cut throttle if you go immediately to the floor from a standstill like a panic start but a quick, steady application of throttle gets it moving right away.

I believed everybody should enjoy what we have 2nd or 3rd gen. If want more power get a raptor then. Or even a tundra with supercharger ( sorry totally didn't read through the whole thread, but people be happy cuz is 4th of July weekend)

    Yep

Enjoy the truck you have whether it's a 2nd or 3rd gen. If not happy, find a truck next time more suited to your needs. Tacomas are decent trucks for a lot of things but they're far from perfect for every single truck application.
