I'm planning out a sleeping platform build and was thinking about making the two larger pieces that are actually slept on padded with some kind of foam under the carpet. I don't see too many other people around here doing that. Is this a good idea?

I have a closed-cell foam pad that I use backpacking that I plan on also putting between me and the wood, but I don't think that alone would be enough.

    Basic overland stuff...
I bought one of these on Amazon for my camper build. They make them in all sizes. We're happy with it.

My platform is both a sleeping platform and a cargo management system. For cargo management, I place the small stuff under and the bigger stuff on top (like totes, wood, etc.). Keeps things nice & organized. Having the padding be part of the platform makes it hard to slide things in & out easily. For when I use it to sleep on, I have a 2.5" thick piece of memory foam (same size as platform) I simply place on top and cover with a fleece blanket. When I'm done with it, I roll it up and cynch it up with some Velcro straps and store in a closet.

Dual density foam, soft and firm glued together, from a foam mattress store cut to size is very comfortable. We always kept it separate from the platform, and it also worked great in the tent when we set that up. If you can raise the level of the platform enough to slide plastic milk crates and gear packers under it, it makes for a dandy cargo storage system.

I left my platform plywood to be easier to clean/maintain when I had my hunting dogs (crates) back there. Filthy after a hunt, but I love them. We already had a 6'x4'x3" open cell pad, but it was a little to soft. Then I found two sets of those "puzzle" workout mats(they make them colored for child play rooms). 2'x2' and 6 of them locked together with the edging fit a long bed perfectly! Two layers of those and the open cell and I sleep great.

Oh, and two piece platform so I can slide one over the other to access gear in the front.

Looking to do something similar to this for mine. Want to put in some plywood + marine carpeting so the dogs don't slide around the bed at all. I like that puzzle mat idea on top though. Did you put a joining hinge between the two piece platform? Or just sitting flush side by side?

Would love to see any pictures of your setup! Was at the hardware store today looking at some options but haven't bought anything yet...

Glad to share. I built this platform for my 2006 Tacoma and moved it to my 2017 a few weeks ago. We sleep in it several weeks per year.
my (used to be) 2006 beside my 2017
bed set up before the puzzle mats. Note the tubs under.
You ca see the puzzle mats here... and the makings of some boondock heuvos rancheros!
raw plywood, set up for two dogs. I like my dogs in crates, and I usually have four dogs/crates at a time.
Not hinged. These were tight in the '06.
I slide one over the other or pull one out if I need in the front. I've done this with the mattress in place too.
I did build a center rib for support out of the end of the plywood sheet
Notched the 2x6s to line up with the side ledges.
Seldom used gear goes in front; second weeks food, spare clothes, climbing gear when we are backpacking.
Halfway through the trip we do a "gear bomb" in a parking lot.

Take a look at my truck build in my sig to see my sleeping platform/storage system. I have a 3" High Density and a 4" memory foam topper that goes on top of it wrapped in a king sized duvet cover.

Thanks, was just checking that out. Love your build, the black Softtopper looks great on it too!
