Since I have gotten my truck I have wanted a roof rack of some sort yet haven't liked the functionality(OEM), or price (Baja, Warrior, Frontrunner), so I thought of an idea I saw a while back on an FJ cruiser.
What if I were to buy the arb roof rack fit kit shown in the picture below and mounted yakima crossbars to it and in theory should have a low profile, low cost, and high strength roof rack.

The rack would look much like this:

    but on a tacoma.
The price for the fit kit is 169 and Yakima crossbars are about 75, so for roughly 245 dollars (50-100 less than oem) the thought of having a fairly strong roof rack is pretty enticing. I would also throw on my yakima 44 inch fairing I already have. I could in the future also add a Yakima load warrior and get a look much like this but more low profile to the roof, meaning less wind noise.

So guys what are your thoughts?

What cargo is going on the rack?

If I understand correctly, you want gutter mounts and crossbars that are 52+ inches.

    Is that correct?

Yes I plan on adding crossbars that would clear the edges giving a good bit of cargo capacity.

What's the load rating on the Yakima crossbars? I know price is an issue, but there is a reason why others are more expensive.

Did you end up going through with this geauxtaco? Do you have any photos of final product installed? Im thinking of doing the exact same thing on my 2nd gen, basket over the cab to help protect from some of the hail we get out here in denver. I already picked up some HD Yakima Crossbars (86in is way too long, but I was thinking of either cutting them down to the same size as the ones on the camper *66in i think and theyll be super strong too), and they came with some control towers (i dont have the tracks for them on the cab only on the camper top) and was thinking of figuring out a way to either mount those towers to this ARB roof rack mount that you posted above, and then clamp the roof basket I have onto that, or just mount the basket straight to those mounts depending on what fits to that ARB bracket. Any input would be helpful, thanks!

I like it! I was thinking of going a similar route. I just picked up an OEM roof rack from a member here and I've been eyeing some cross bars and carriers.

I would put functionality over strength. All the roof racks are transferring all the weight into the stock mounting holes in the roof. I personally would not trust a ton of weight up there in highway winds and a shakey dynamic load trail riding.

A ton meaning 250 lbs total.

Interested to see what you come up with.

Yeah for sure, I'm just doing a cargo basket for any dirty gear we dont want in the truck or whatever or just for coolers on the roof and strap em down. Nothing too heavy. mainly for a little bit of hail protection over the cab (coming into hail season in denver) and just some functional cargo space where I can strap some gear to when we go camping.

I just finshed coating the whole roof basket with a sealant/rust proof coating, and a few layers of plastidip overtop of everything to try and limit future scrapes and stuff and keep it rust free as long as possible (probably fooling myself). i also got some of plastidip's metalizer to try out to give it a little bit of a more metallic look than just matte black. I got some plastidip wheel kit on Amazon and the photos of the final look for wheels I thought looked a little better than matte black. Worst comes to worse Ill just peel it and go back to black. We'll see how it turns out!

I also am probably just going to mount it to the existing crossbars i have over the bed cap I have for the time being until I figure out how to mount the crossbars over the cab.
