Works just fine on the mile and a half drive to Walmart and back. On hills it drops a gear. Also if you have the cruise control set and there is any kind of head wind it drops a gear also. I was going to trade up to a V6 around NOV of 2018 but I think I'll stay with the 2.7 in a different color.

Now why did you have to tell me that? I might have to lift now.

*searched your posts and see that we're not apples/apples if I went the same route you did. I'm definitely going to look into it, though. Trying to get a better ride quality for my one pup who gets carsick, and everything I've scouted so far seems to lift the truck.

Like a few have mentioned it is a dog on the interstate where the speed limit is 70 and up (like here in the DFW area). I have the auto double cab and would not consider manual with this stop and go traffic and my bad knees. My commute is pretty short and has one large hill-climb on the way home at 65mph and to maintain that speed it drops to 4th and is about at 3.5 rpms. 35-65mph and around the city is where this truck is happy but I get my doors blown off on the interstate by passing vehicles. Mine came with the convenience package so I have cruise control but it is worthless really. Unless the road is completely flat I don't use it. Cruise will have you in 5th or 4th, and sometimes even third on the Interstate at the slightest hill like an overpass or a slight headwind so your MPG's will suffer. If I drive without cruise on the highway I can feather the throttle to keep it from gear searching and generally will only downshift into 5th unless its a steep hill.

I would have been much happier with a Tundra. This truck is small and we are a tall family but overall it is a very reliable truck and I have very few complaints at this point so it will do for now. When the kids start to enter the teens I may look into upgrading so they don't get cramped in the back seat on a long camping trip. Hopefully by then the new Tundras will be the "all new" model we keep waiting for and the MPG's will be more reasonable.

I owned a 2015 4 cylinder until just 2 months ago. Never had ANY issues with it mechanically. Slower yes, no features sucked but extremely good on gas :)

How did you do on the trade in? Auto sales are slowing significantly and automakers have a lot of inventory so I am thinking there are going to be some insane deals on half tons come fall. Just kicking around the idea anyway.

I like mine, only get 4cyl 4x4 5 speed, anything else is a waste of money, bullet proof set-up, the trade-off is power, but lower your expectations, I have a V8 tundra at home, and I prefer to drive my 4 banger over it.

Since we are on the topic of the 2TR, can anyone say if there's any difference between the 2016 and 2017 engine? I am looking at the LCE header but they have it only listed as compatible up to 2016 and have told me they haven't had a 2017 to test it on.

I'm getting 26, 27 mpg on mine, (Highway miles). I drive in S4 in town and out on the highway I bump it up into S5. I don't use 6th gear.

My 2016 2.7L with 22xxx miles is slow. I can feel the kick if I go over 3.000 rpm what doesn't seems hi. The issue is that the tranny (auto) almost always works under 3.000 so you always feel underpowered.

It takes time for you to get used to the truck or the truck used to you hahah either way... after a year I play somedays with ECT and S and it's more fun..

i guess you don't have to care too much if you rev it a little bit more than your other cars to feel it more powerful.

Change your oil/filter every 5k and rev it!

After reading this, I was intrigued. I went to the build site to see what I was looking at and it looks like I can't have the set up that I want.
    SR5, 4 door, 4x4, MT. Pretty simple truck, but can't get a 4x4.

Had two second gen 4 cylinder tacomas. Great engines but even with 4.10 gears they would drop 2 gears going up a small incline once bigger tires were added.

LOVE the 2.7 manual 4x4. Wanted to buy a reg. cab 2nd gen but couldn't find one anywhere for a reasonable price. Seems people know what they have in those little beasts.

Lots of facepalm-worthy posts regarding 4cyl vs. V6 vs. Civic si posts here. I am entertained.

For me I don't do a lot of hauling, just a bed of wood every now and then which is very heavy. 6cylinder was $5-6k more. With the 4cylinder and access cab the payload towing was higher for the 4cylinder due to the reduced weight of vehicle thus allowing more weight in the bed on stock suspension, actually towing behind obviously 6 cylinder can tow behind more but weighs more empty and thus its recommended payload towing is lower. Since I don't have a trailer and most of my heavy towing or moving stuff is just in the bed. My 4cylinder with 6ft bed made sense.

When warranty is over I will do the ECT on always mod. Loved it when it was a push button and you just pushed it on and was on until you turned it off.

For now I will only do the cold air intake and the TRD exhaust for just a slight HP improvement.
