Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

I must have the 48 state model because I don't have the third catalyst everyone is talking about.
Just the two off each side of the engine.

Spec-U exhaust is ordered.

There are two sets of catalytic converters, two on each side for a total of 4.

Two come off the manifold almost immediately. These are the primary cats, and where the primary O2 sensor pulls info from.

There are two more cats at the beginning of the y-pipe. There is a O2 sensor on the driver's side cat here as well, but it will not throw a code if you remove these cats.

The urd y-pipe and/or spec u exhaust system, removes the rear two cats, and the general consensus is, it will still pass a emissions test. The URD power extractors remove the front/primary set of cats and will make the truck technically EPA illegal and throw a code.

Huh? I wasn't talking about a third cat. He was asking if he can cut the last couple feet of pipe to dump straight down after the rear axle instead of having a side exit with the tailpipe behind the rear wheel. As you stated, Taco just has 4 cats (2 on each side). Spec-U removes the 2 rear cats.

I should rephrase. Can I pass a CA emissions test with it on? So far it sounds like yes but in theory.

 

I would think no one has done a smog test with it installed yet. Unless you have a buddy that works at a smog station i think it going to be difficult to pass the eyeball inspection they have been checking cars pretty thorough in California.

No you're not. Tacomaworld said you can't.

 

You only have to do smog check every 2 years in California so save your stock exhaust ,from what i have read it's bolt on - bolt off mod just swap it out if you have to.

 

Rear cats are not monitored / have O2 sensors. So no CEL or not ready codes. Removing them wont do anything but make noise. Even in CA, unless they physically get under the truck and go "where are the two rear cats from the factory system?"

 

Yes they do a pretty good visual inspection!

 

I dont know the laws in CA but emissions/smog they dont have visual references to compare and theres no CEL or codes so why would it matter? I highly doubt the tech would know there are 2 rear cats that arent even monitored.

 

Cali has some of the toughest smog rule's i think then any other state.
