Dude there is a rule, it's unwritten of course, but if you're going to make the playoffs win at least one fucking game or be jinxed for a decade. (maybe more) (aka: hockey Gods pee in your cheerios)

Nope. Long story short they have money for 2 years to spend and have to reach the cap to take advantage of the LTIR contracts so this is a no brainer. He fills a role for a couple years and he won't play the 3rd year, he only makes 1.5 mil. Probably bluff an injury

With the bonus structure it's basically 2 years. They will get rid of the 3rd just like everyone else they wanted to. It's a good piece to their top 9

That happens a lot ... especially in markets like Van & Montreal, where they seem to be breeding grounds for spineless cheese eating winos.

I didnt see this before. Id say this is quite a stretch of a claim. Like i said, Daley right now wouldve been a nice upgrade to Leafs D core. Schulz, Cole and Dumo are very solid. Mattaa was a top prospect who lost his game as of late (but still has value). Hainsey was solid, who you guys aquired. Ruwhedel just got resigned with expectations to be in our starting 6. And the biggie, Letang who was hurt. Plus add in that Pens were stacked top to bottom at fwd. That helps a bit.

I'd stick Rielly, Gardiner, and Zaitsev up against Schulz, Cole, and Dumo. None of them are true number 1's but they can all play a strong role in the top 4 without any issues. Keep in mind I'm not insulting what Pittsburgh did but from the outside looking in most people felt that Pittsburgh's success on D in the playoffs had more to do with a team effort than the bodies they had on the ice being better than we'd ever seen before. I think we are somewhat on the same page there. If anything you might feel like I'm belittling Pittsburgh without Letang, which I'm not. I think Pittsburgh is a great TEAM that can still be the best without Letang, not because they have a great D core behind him, but because the core is ok and the rest of the team can fill in any gaps because they are that talented. I think Toronto is trying to go that direction.

Make no mistake, I'm sure if the opportunity was there to sign or trade for a top 3 guy was there for the Leafs at an acceptable price point they would of payed the price. However instead of a D they found a leader and all around balanced veteran forward who fit because, like I said but not as well:
Keep in mind as well that TO's D I just mentioned has together about a decades worth of NHL experience. Pittsburghs three you named has double that. As TO's D ages, especially Rielly and Zaitsev, we can expect a lot better play out of them. Gardiner's play in the back half of the year was outstanding and in the playoffs you could argue he was Toronto's best D. He's also the most experienced out of the three by a bit which is probably related.

There was a joke late last year that TSN literally could not find Lupul because Robidas Island was now real and has no phone lines lol.

Agree. A lot of pens gave up their body to block shots...benefited the defense and goalie. Bonino was huge in that regard.

ya the internet has been talking about it for years now. The leafs can dump any contract they want. Phaneuf, Kessel (retained, probably the worst), Clarkson, Lupul, Horton, Robidas. They only intend on keeping Marleau 2 years and obviously have an agreement with him of some sort for the 3rd year. The contract only pays him 1.25 mil after the signing bonus in year 3 so you know he wont want to play. So its basically a 2 year deal and we all know they have tons of cash to spend for 2 years

They still need Bishop to show up. I'm not sold he has what he showed two years ago though. I guess we will find out.

Kovalchuk will not return to the NHL this year:

    http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/article/kovalchuk-staying-in-khl-for-another-season-1.796346

From what's been said this is because of a combination of things. First off, New Jersey wasn't going to do him any favors which limited his ability to come back to a competitive team. Secondly, if Kovalchuk waits a year he can sign a deal as a plus 35 player which opens up a lot of bonus structure similar to what Marleau got in TO. Considering Kovalchuk is only coming back because his Rubles aren't worth the shit paper they are printed on, a heavy incentive deal gives him the opportunity to make an insane signing bonus plus maybe a few performance bonuses to boot.

also because he wanted a minimum 3 years at 6-7 mil. Thats too much risk for teams right now

I think he will be fine. It's not like that was his only good year. The few before that were also very solid and he played like 60 games. Plus, in the playoffs he has been a monster. I think Dallas is much improved now and Bishop will give them that key/timely save that they have been lacking. I don't like Radulov, as a fan but that was still a nice addition if he plays the way he did last year. Add in Methot and that is pretty nice.
