Hello everyone. I just purchased a new 4x4 DB-cab Tacoma with the 4.0. I only have 248 miles on this truck. Yesterday I started my truck up after it had sat for the past 4 days and it put out a puff or white smoke on start up. Please dont tell me I have a lemon. Any input would be greatly apprciated. I am hoping this will stop after the break in period...HELP

my 2010 tacoma does the same thing. when i start it on a cold morning and drive down the road, alot of white smoke or vapor comes out of the exhaust, but then the engine warms up and it goes away. my 2001 tundra did the same thing

White smoke might just be water vapor or unreacted exhaust. Blue smoke is oil and what you need to worry about. Next time you start your truck, check what color the smoke is. Here are two common causes of both colors smoke on a new vehicle.

When you first start the car, the cat is not warm and doesn't allow all the exhaust to react as it should before leaving the tailpipe. This is exacerbated in the winter with the cold ambient temperature. This creates the white smoke. Don't worry about it, it just happens and it won't hurt anything in your truck.

I can't say this is the case of the Toyota engines but some of the older Honda VTEC engines (think Prelude) had an issue where oil would build up in the complex valve train after letting the car sit. Some of the gaskets for the VTEC components would shrink as the engine cooled and let some of that oil trickle into the cylinders, but only a minute amount. When you next start up the engine, the oil will burn off in the first few minutes. This also isn't really a problem but it's good to keep an eye on it. I haven't heard of this being an issue with our engine so I'd be surprised if it was the case. I'd bet the cold cat is your problem.

Give the piston rings a chance to seat completely, about 3000 miles

I get the white exhaust as well with 325 miles on the truck. I would bet that it will be gone by the first oil change.

I was always taught that white smoke is vapor and blue smoke is oil. However, my R1150GS air cooled motorbike puts out white smoke every now and then and most of the time in the morning -- it's definitly not vapor. It burned a modest amount of oil till I wreked it at 88k miles

The piston rings may have not seated or who knows what it was. Again the bike worked Like a champ and compression on both cilinders what on the high end of the mfg specs.

Keep an eye on the oil till you know if it consumes oil or not. Remember just because it consumes a little oil doesn't = bad engine
