    Hi everyone,
I purchased my second brand new Tacoma in October 2016 it's a 2017 SR5 4 door 4x4 and it's the first time I hear a wisleling noise wen I reach 45 km/h up to 95 km/h. It's sounds like it's coming from the mirror on both sides.
The other noise I'm getting is wen I let go the gas wen I'm at around 95 km/h on the decelaration a noise coming from the back, it's sounds like wen you have an aggressive threads on tires that make noise wen your driving, it just started doing that noise at around 11000km.
My truck as only 13200km on the counter.
I went to the dealer and they said it's normal because it decompressing to slow down the truck??? Never did that sound wen the truck was new
I previous owned a 2008 Tacoma never add that kind of noise on the it.
Those anymore have this king of noise for the wind or widing noise from the back wheel?
    Thank

The noise at 95 km/hr is from the rear differential and is covered extensively in one of the threads listed above. Many of us have had the differential replaced and the noise comes back even on the new differential.

Toyota's official word to me, on my second differential howling loud enough to hear with the radio on past volume 20, is that the noise level is acceptable and normal for the vehicle.

I think my howling noise is the exhaust tail pipe chrome tip

    Hi everyone,
A little update on the winding noise coming from the back wheels.
On the way to work I did a test to locate the noise and on the highway at 100 km/h the noise was there has usual and I let go the gas and shifted to neutral and the noise disappeared instantly .
That confirmed me that it comes from the diffenretial and has soon I put it back to Drive the noise comes back on.
Aero90 has put me on the exact track to locate the noise.
Now that I have the location I need to find out if it's the bearing of the drive shaft connecting to the diffenretial that is faulty or if it's inside the diffenretial.
    More to come soon

I just want to let you know that I have had my differential replaced already for this and spent quite a bit of time with Toyota on this. The service department inspected my old differential and found no signs of abnormal wear. Toyota engineering was sent videos of the noise inside the cabin so they could analyze the sound portion of it. They determined that the noise level was acceptable (as I said before, I can hear it with the radio on past 20), even on the brand new differential making noise. The general "consensus" was that the noise is a resonance frequency being heard as a result of the amount of sound damping material (or lack of?) on the truck and that the noise is normal and not of concern for premature wear or failure. I was then told they would not be pursuing the issue further UNLESS something broke or it got a lot worse.

There is no fix at this time for the issue and yes, many agree it is an annoying one (and honestly 90% of the reason I'm getting rid of the truck soon). After 12k miles on the new differential i wouldn't say it has gotten much louder, but I notice it over a wider speed range now (i.e. all the way up to 80 mph although not nearly as loud). The truck is nice overall and I can look past a lot of the other issues, but I will not be stuck with a recently payed off $30+k truck, out of warranty, chasing driveline issues (I also have the rumbling vibration coming to a stop which seems driveline related).

Good luck to you, but unless Toyota changes their course of action right now, you have a long road ahead of you trying to fix this.

And for your reference, here are the two videos I took of the noise. Toyota Engineering received these videos as well as (this is what I was told) a sound sample taken with some sort of special recording device (I was not there for this):

    1st differential:

2nd differential within a day or two after being installed:

Of course, a phone recording doesn't capture the audio perfectly, but you get the idea.

I think my howling noise may be my exhaust tip. Just looking at it there's a hole in it for drainage and the tip itself has rolled edges.20170704_200702.jpg

There are many of us without the exhaust tip, or a completely different catback, that have the howling. I know a couple members had the dealership run the truck on a lift and they used a stethoscope to isolate the howling to the differential itself. If yours howls under the same conditions (50-60 mph, feathering the throttle) it most likely is the differential.

Cool. Really doesn't bother me enough to do anything. I'll just drive it and fix it if and when it blows

On my 04 i remember when i installed a new aftermarket muffler the truck developed almost this exact howl. Question who is actually diagnosing that the diff is the culprit? The truck owners? I read someone had a new diff installed and the noise didn't go away. Just trying to think outside the box as news diffs apparently are not fixing? I feel for the tacoma owners who have this and making them hate the truck. Hope it gets resolved

I'm one of the ones with a replacement diff that was quiet for all of 15 minutes until it started howling again (very slowly getting louder/noticeable over a wider speed range). Toyota diagnosed mine. Both the service department and Toyota Engineering.
