Laid mine up on 6/21. Dealer, distributor, and Toyota USA cannot/will not provide any information as to what the exact problem is. Yet they are continuing to build the Tacos. Are the new ones using the same part numbers as the affected ones? Are all Tacos affected built in USA, Mexico, or both countries? I emailed Toyota USA president Jim Lentz and the next day received a call from an assistant. Nice lady but could not provide pertinent info. Between the transmission issues and the differential issue Toyota has egg on it's face.

Yes the do have egg all over. I am not sure about the answer if they are continuing to build or not and if they are using the same parts. I am very interested in their logic though. The dealer I took mine to has 6 tacos on the lot for repair. If parts are available as stated in the letter then it should be only 21.5 estimated hours to fix all trucks on the lot. So why am I suppose to wait a month or more. Does not give me confidence in Toyota at all!

I switched my Tacoma into a 4Runner. Just too many issues with the new Tacoma.
Respect to you guys who are dealing with issues. What will be next? The 4runners 4.0 was what I expected from the Tacoma. After 4 Tacomas, I'm going in anther more consistent direction BEFORE the new 2018s arrive with the 3.5 engine on a unibody frame. Another beta test by loyal customers.

I don't think mileage has a "magic" number at which leaks show up. I had a few top diff fasteners loose and no leak and I'm now 22k+.

All diffs and all other components should always be checked as part of regular (5k) maintenance during vehicle ownership period and noted.

It is unfortunate though, that most diff are not even checked by most techs or owners during this maintenance intervals, and maybe because seepage is common across all brands.

Tech found leaks at 6,000 miles on my Taco, so when did my leak start? Who knows could've been 50 miles...

It can take years to clear out defective inventory.Defective or not they will be used and sold at all cost.

Toyota Corporate Executives and large shareholders never take the loss for their stupidity, greed and mistakes. You can bet all losses related to defective engineering and junk manufacturing standards will always be passed on to the consumer.

Checked mine again yesterday since I have a short trip coming up and it looks like it's still leak free. That being said, I did have my first driveline clunk today since having everything replaced the first time 4-5 weeks ago. Was very sad to see it come back...

I hyper miled my way from SC to NJ and back.....and got 23MPG on the 4Runner. Not bad. Tacoma was about the same. Less comfortable without the powered seat adjustments along the way

So my truck has been confiscated since 6/26, I just got off the phone with service for a status update, and I was told they haven't received the parts yet. I mean, I knew my truck wasn't going to be ready yet, but what the actual fuck...

How long does it take to ship a case of gaskets out to dealerships?

I actually called my dealership the parts department and I asked them if the gasket was in and they told me no they ordered it on the 26th but yet they've been having my truck since the 21st they told me that the gaskets would arrive by middle or end of July they are coming from overseas. I understand your frustration trust and believe that's why I took it upon myself to email Jim Lentz from

Most Tacoma buyers see the $37,000 shiny new plastic looking rig on the lot and can't help themselves. They pay little attention to the reliability of the core components like the drive train, transmission and engine.

Loyal Tacoma buyers don't seem to be bothered that the Tijuana Mex. plant is taking over more of the production or that many of the core parts are now manufactured cheaply by third party vendors and low paid, low skilled workers in third world nations.

Ha, that's the first thing smart buyers look at ... Nissan (if they play their cards right) will be unveiling the new Frontier at the right time and could possibly grab more market share of ex-yota peeps.

This is straight from the NHTSA website regarding the Taco diff recall.
I wonder if a hundred or so complaints would get something done quicker?

    Things that make me laugh:

The parts are taking along time because they are coming from overseas. Are you sending the parts China Post? They are gaskets, not entire cars. You can have them here in 7 days with very little expense.
Its taking this long because of allocation of the parts. BS, it took this long because you were not sure how much variability there was in the defective parts and what gasket design would work, and you are too cheap to expedite them once the design was finalized.

Things that don't make me laugh: driving a RAV4 instead of my Tacoma.

Might want to check your rental agreement. Mine says that I have to pick it up the day after the repairs are finished or I start paying for the rental.

At least you guys got Toyotas, I needed a truck. It was a f150 (not a raptor) or a frontier from enterprise rent a car.

I asked for a truck but there were none left. I would have gladly taken an F150 in a hot second.
