The big A.T. Question

I got both TSB updates... when I first bought the truck it shifted like a concussed Prius. First update worked well for about a week, then went back to its old habits. It's been over 7k miles on the latest TSB update and now it shifts awesome, the way I expect it to. No more ECT mode needed while driving around town. Toyota responsively and responsibly fixed the issue. No more issues.

 

OMG! So they made it using like stone knives and bear skins, right?

 

The responses are encouraging - Perhaps I have been reading too much into the negative comments? As for the old sayings about displacement - The world is changing to smaller displacement engines with higher efficiency. Toyota is being criticized by some for hanging on to their V6 in the Camry while others are moving to 4 bangers with Super or Turb-Chargers. The days of the long-stroker big mills is coming to an end Look at what Ford is doing with their eco-boost technology. Toyota has been getting the economy numbers up for some time with Hybrids. The time will come that the Tacoma's and 4Runners will probably see smaller/less displacement engines with turbos or hybrid technology. If you long for loads of low-end torque...Better buy the GM Diesel. Then again there are those that don't know what a tach is for and have '2-pedal' vehicles. Clay

 

Out of curiosity, when did you have the TSB updates? Would a new truck bought last month be delivered with said updates or is it likely they are not being applied before delivery? Or do 17s not need the updates?

 

My last update was a couple months ago... I would imagine that trucks go from production to delivery within about 30-60 days. I don't know, but I assume they would put the latest software in new production trucks. You could always go to your dealer and ask them at your next 5k service to see if it's up to date, and if it's not they'll take an hour or so to install the update.
