Hybrid Audio L8's in doors?

Has anyone here managed to squeeze a set of Hybrid Audio L8 midbass drivers in the front doors?

I've got L6's in there right now, but thinking of upgrading, but not sure if it can be done without modifying the door (cutting metal, etc etc.)

If anyone's done or had thoughts, please let me know. Thanks.

Me too. That's a big cavity where those stock speakers go. Marv said he thought it would when I was talking to him, but you had to orient the speaker basket a certain way. We didn't get to finish talking about it b/c he had to go though.

I'm just wondering if the doors can take a 8" mid bass. That's alot of size and power for the doors. to handle I'd think.

 

Don't worry man, if it fits and you treat the door properly (talking about deadening here) then they'll do great. Marv might be right with respect to orienting the driver. I'd suspect you'll need at least a 1" thick baffle and then spin the driver so that the basket spokes aren't at the outer most constrained dimension. Hope that makes sense.

 

Yes, that's exactly what Marv was talking about (speaker orientation), I got that much before he had to run.

My doors are done "properly" as Marv says. Outer skin covered in Raammat BXT II, doubled up behind the speaker; inner skin access holes covered, then covered with more BXT II, then all that covered with ensolite. Rock solid and quiet.

Different opinions on deadening out there I realize (I know you used Don's stuff and his method),but I'm pretty sure my doors are good to go.

I'm happy with my L1v2 tweets and L6's (in stock locations - ,) and still learning how to tune and get it dialed in, just already thinking of where I could go from here. 3-way? L8's in doors? Adding kicks and relocating tweets to a-pillars...it never stops.

I think that the L8 will fit the speaker opening, but I would have two concerns:

1. The opening on the plastic door panel. I'm pretty sure that some of the speaker will be blocked based on the size of the grill in the door panel. If I were to go this route, I would modify the door panel to allow the entire speaker to be obstructed.

2. I'm not sure if the depth of the speaker would interfere with the the window when it's rolled down. Most likely not, but definitely worth consideration.

For what its worth, I have the HAT Imagine Series in the front (their entry level) and I love them.

 

Yeah, you've done the doors right it sounds like. I use Don's stuff because I only need one layer most of the time and the adhesive has a high heat tolarance which is a must here in the Texas heat.

You know...you could run the L8's and a pair of L4's without tweeters

 

Whats a L6? I am looking to replace my mids and tweets now, but not sure what to go with.
Do you like yours? What should I expect to pay?
I still have to open up my door and see what size speakers I need for all 4 doors. Unless you know what I need?

Hybrid Audio is fairly new to the seen, but they have have been making a lot of waves in the car audio industry by having cars with their speakers winning high end car audio comps world wide. They are a great company with exceptional customer service... and there is a reason they are winning car audio comps... their speakers sound phenomenal (purely subjective to the listener).

Oh, I didn't think about the opening on the door panel. I need to fix a small rattle in my driver's side door this weekend, so I'll take a look and measure when I take the panel off. Thanks for thinking of that.

The depth I think will work, but I will def measure that to be sure.

BTW, your kick pods look amazing. I'd love to give that a try myself, but I know I'd probably screw them up. How are they working out for you? Do you happen to have Weathertech floor liners in the front?

 

I keep hearing that's a good combo, but those L1 Pro SE's are so damn sexy!

 

Both can be done. But I have a thing for the L4. It's a very interesting driver. I'd like to own a pair one day.

 

The kick pods are working out great... I'm very happy with them. The big thing for me when deciding to put them in was loosing floor space, but now that they're in... I don't even notice them while driving. I do have the Weathertech floor mats, which I had to trim to make them fit and it worked out well.

 

Checked this out today, and you are right, part of the speaker would be obstructed.

The grill opening in the door is oval sized to match the stock 6x9's. The opening is 6" tall and 9" wide. So I don't know how much that would affect speaker performance in that case.

Maybe I should just wait and upgrade to the L6 Pro when it comes out?
