My welds are getting better.

 

Good job for a process you don`t care for!!!

 

I just have to love companies buy a new piece of welding equipment put the operators /user manual on the shelf in the Purchasing agents office .

So that the employees in the field /shop never see it.

Theses products are changing all the time more then likely billed $1000.00 this last week for welding machines working just like they should.

Take the time read your manual .

Buying used machines most all manuals can be found a down loaded online Get the ones of machines you might think about buying

Do your homework !!

 

Just found this series of videos. These jigs are very useful looking. I don't know why I never built something like this years ago.

I looked at the prices of these, looks pretty reasonable.

I pretty sure I'd just build my own.

They advertise that the jigs are machined to perfect tolerances. I think I could make my own and be close enough. I'm a fabricator, not a machinist.

Check out the vids. He has an awesome fabrication table, but I think its overkill for most of us.

 

Yes but being a Fabricator means you can do machining work but choose not to !!

I know I find it so very boring I don`t mind turning down a shaft prior to build up and then machining back to original dimensions

The same with milling slots for adjustments

But all day every day my brain would explode.

 

I've seen the " thousand yard stare" the machinist get around here.

Not for me.

 

Any tips on MIG welding stainless exhaust pipe? Using 308L wire, 75/25 argon/CO2 mix. Puddle ran down the joint on me. Turned the heat down a bit but still had the tendency to flow too much.

 

What size wire is that? Smaller wire would be easier to control.

I don't do much stainless mig welding, if I do, I just use the 70s, carbon steel wire that already is in my welder. The weld isn't stainless, but

 

hmmm... that's what i did... unknowingly! So far so good.

 

It's .030. I wanted the weld to be stainless for longevity. Never used it before. I was freaked out by how runny the puddle was. Obviously never had that issue before when welding steel.

 

Your using the wrong gas for Stainless straight Argon unless your doing quite a bit and get into the exotic blends .

Is the exhaust system on the truck ?? If it was able to be driven I would let you weld it here .

 

Your using the wrong gas. To MIG stainless, use a tri-mix. Helium,Argon, CO2. Straight Argon is for TIG welding.

 

Guess my internet research was wrong. I assume a argon helium CO2 mix would also be used for TIG welding stainless also?

 

Straight Argon is all you will need to TIG weld stainless.

 

I was under the impression that the weld/filler material had more to do with gas selection than the process. Thanks for clarifying.

 

Like i said if your going to do alot of Stainless go for a blend

It will allow you to do spray Transfer I doubt for exhaust systems you need to do spray unless your mass producing

I used the Tri Mix over the years in both GMAW and GTAW before it became main stream I had it Custom blended

For quick small jobs I like straight Argon

It all comes down to how much your going to use

By chance do you know what grade Stainless the pipe is ??

 

Type 304. I may end up just keeping a tank of straight Argon around.

 

almost all of my exhaust is 304 ss welded with carbon steel wire wire and 95/5 gas

but since you already have the wire I guess getting a trimix and having it all ss would be nice (we don't have to worry with exhaust rusting out much in Alabama since we never see salt on the roads

 

Finished up my fabrication squares. Fun project.
