That's actually the clear coat failing. It looks like little lines in the paint. Trust me, that's not from me doing a shitty job washing it. I can watch this get worse by the day. It's so depressing.......

My bsp 08 is the same. Got a quote to repaint my hood, roof, and grill for $500. I had to plasti dip my roof to protect it from rust since the paint cracked and had bare metal showing.

I just realized our trucks were made in California, or at least mine was. Reminds me of when the 3rd gen Camaro/Firebird was being produced, some were made in Van Nuys, CA and some were made in Norwood, OH. After a few years people stared noticing that the CA built cars had serious paint problems, while the OH cars were in much better shape. Turns out CA required some special low voc paint that didn't hold up worth a damn. Makes me wonder if that's the case with these Tacomas?

Aren't these made in San Antonio? I think the engineers are in CA (or were in CA).

Fremont, CA. Production moved to San Antonio in August 2009 (according to Wiki).

I was out washing and waxing mine (in SoCal) this morning and it looks like the same thing is happening on top of the cab.

It's a '06 from Arizona that I just bought this February but I didn't see any issue with the paint when I picked it up then. I am in the process of ordering clay bars, sealant, polish clothes and better wax etc. and would like any advice. I have NuPolish, another from Amazon, and clay bars so far - anything else I should try? Thanks

Just look for ones that say they have UV filters in them. I have used NXT TechWax with no complaints. Avoid automatic carwashes since it strips it right back off, and only wash with car wash soap. I see people all the time wash their car with dish soap, that's a BIG no no!

Really I'm not sure if it's the UV rays or just the heat itself. That black gets hot enough to fry bacon on.

Just to be clear here -- you know that all the stuff you are ordering can't fix the paint failure on the roof right? I assume you're buying it to protect what is left?

OP consider vinyl wrapping your roof/hood. I don't know the specifics of the potential increased prep work for proper adhesion, but it's worth looking into.

I'd wager that a vehicles paint is the least cared for aspect in most cases. It is important to wash, clay bar and wax your paint a few times a year in order to properly protect it.

Information you could have used about 9 years ago, eh?

Same here with my 04, For the past 4 years i owned it its been sitting out in the SoCal sun. Started out as a little mark on my roof then progressed.
Now my hood is starting to look like my roof.

100% carnuba wax, if you leave the truck parked outside in the heat all the time, will maybe last 4 weeks. There are 52 weeks in a year. Waxing twice a year will not cut it.

Sealers are synthetic waxes that provide a coverage period of 6-12 months depending on type and care. As stated above, auto washes and non-pH balanced car soaps will strip most waxes and sealers right off.

Make sure to clay bar before waxing, polishing, or sealing of you'll scratch the shit out of your finish.

Cars left outside all the time will require a lot more upkeep. Have to keep the truck clean and paint sealed.

More than likely the clear coat is toast. You'll need a dual action polisher and a wet sanding kit. A polish will not fix this. You'll need to basically sand the clear coat off and spray a new one on. Still might not look pretty but its the roof so who cares? At least it wont rust. You could also just Line-X or Monstaline it for less than all the detail equipment would cost

Also looks like what you use your roof rack for is scratching the paint, could be a contributing factor to this and mightbe another reason to go for a bedliner fix.

If you want durable paint, buy a Mercedes Benz as your next car. Those use an ultra hard clearcoat that even pro detailers have trouble fixing without special polishes.

Thanks for the tips Connor, much appreciated. I have not loaded anything up on the roof rack yet. The damage to the clear coat is most likely the previous owner's fault for leaving it in the direct Arizona sun for 9+ years. I'm getting ready for a camping trip to Big Sur in late July and the Eastern Sierras in August so I will have to take care of it before then.
