Was curious what you said about red line having a shorter life. I checked out there website and couldn't find info on change interval. Any idea on this compared to Amsoil. I ran Amsoil signature in my Tundra and really liked it. Never tried red line and from the reviews will prob give it a shot. Do you run Amsoil severe gear in the diffs?

 

Adding my useless opinion into the mix, I recently changed out the transmission fluid on the Taco for Amsoil and it's pretty damn good over the factory crap. But I also had Red Line in my Xterra and VT prior to this and in both cases it was a major improvement.
I think that either fluid is going to be fine for the usage of 99% of the owners on here. If you are racing or crawling or pushing the limits of the transmission I see no reason to choose one over the other for any reason other than access and cost.

 

No problem. I was curious myself before I got the manual when to use it. I figured on a boat ramp would be a good time if you were spinning too much trying to get out.

 

That's kind of how I saw it too. Both have good reviews, both are fair priced. The redline was easier to access and I could get it in 2 days. Amsoil was going to be ordered from their site and I'm not sure how fast it would have gotten to me without paying a higher shipping price. I was able to get redline from Amazon with my prime account.

 

I read it multiple times on Bob is the Oil Guy forums. That's a weird rabbit hole to go down but I suggest doing your research there. As far as change interval is concerned, I will be following the "severe service" conditions in the manual even though that isn't how I'd classify my use case at all. The right way to figure out change intervals is to do it slightly early and send to blackstone. They'll give you an idea of the life left on the oil at the time of change based on remaining additives.

75w-90. Toyota spec calls for 75w-85, but 90 is easier to come by and probably shows no real performance changes.

I've always driven manual vehicles. When i went to test drive a Tacoma, i didn't know what to do with the automatic. it didn't feel right. 100% manual. just to stir the pot, what's wrong with manual?

 

Nothing wrong per say, but it has it's quirks. It shifts like a dump truck, but I know it's a solid transmission!

 

Nothing wrong. Love it! Just going through the systems and getting acquainted with all the sounds and the feel. Asking Qs here just to make sure that the little things seem normal which they do. I am loving the manual and wouldn't have it any other way. Have noticed shifting getting a little smoother as I'm getting used to this drive by wife delay and I believe things are wearing in? Only have 280 miles on her now. Thanks again for all the feedback. This is my first Tacoma. However all my vehicles have been Toyota.

 

Just curious, what does Blackstone charge to run the analysis? A Tacoma transmission only takes 2 or 3 quarts, so wondering if the economics just support replacing frequently vs testing. Now if I had a fleet of big rigs that use 40 quarts per change, I can definitely see how an analysis pays to extend the change interval.

 

It's $28+postage the first time. They send you prepaid postage bottles after that. They also do a bulk program that drops down the price about 5 bucks per volume tier. Technecially, you'd only need to do the test a few times to find the sweet spot.

Wow, I never used clutch cancel for anything other than leaning in for oil changes and not opening my door.

 

Yeah neither did I until I saw a salesman for the Tacoma show on YouTube. Was on a slight incline and got him right up it. Pretty cool. But would think it put some strain on the starter?

 

It's not something I'd want to frequently do, that's for sure. Not sure on the drawbacks, but I'm sure it's not the best for the starter and battery.

Amsoil’s dealer model is actually really nice. You should be able to find a local dealer in your area to purchase from. You may even have a dealer near your home or work. Back in the day I used to be a dealer and I would just meet up with people to supply them the products they needed.

The 3rd Gen Manual Shifts so much smoother than the 2nd Gen, I personally think the difference is quite dramatic.

 

Interesting!! If I ever get the chance, I want to drive one. Only tacomas I've driven were both manuals. One a 2005 and one a 2015.

 

You can literally use 2 fingers to slip it into gear, its nothing like my old 08 and 15s were. The only gear that is a pain is Reverse, it fights me all the time and I plan on trying a fluid change sometime in the near future to see if that helps.

 

So, my 99 t4r needed an muffler today, drop it off at a local shop I'm familiar with in the past. Turns out he drives a 16 dclb auto...says keys are it it come back in 90 mins. First time in an auto Taco

Fine offer and fine work on the muffler... Two immediate thoughts...first, it was not as fun to drive as my MT, two...the AT seemed to drive fine

 

Wow. That is one of the better auto corrects I've had! Awesome.
