Hey everyone, I'm looking into doing a rear disc brake swap. I noticed a the 4Runner has them and didn't know if anyone has ever tried just swapping them over and putting a proportion valve on.

Why do you want to do the conversion?

If I was to do it it would be way more as I would need bigger wheels and tires. So more like 4K.

I could understand doing a disc conversion if you had an Xrunner track truck or something, but why spend that kind of coin for no reason? Cool points not withstanding... ;)

If cool points aren't a factor then I would buy 2000 gallons of gasoline with the 4K.

Or I would put it towards my suspension. But my drums work fine for my needs. Popped them off the other day, 80k and they are still looking great. Scrubbed them down and got them looking new.

Yeah I need to take a wire brush to mine and repaint them, they are looking a little rough.

I was talking about the shoes themselves. We have a hell of a partswasher here at work. I just lift my truck and put the tank under it and scrub all that nasty dirt away.

I wouldn't for two reasons. #1 cost and #2 the time it would take to do this would be equivilent to like 2-3 brake pad replacements on the drums. So nothing gained.

    +1

Unless you're okay spending big bucks and/or lots of effort on a custom job just to look cool, this conversion would be a waste of time and money.

It is not just to look cool, for those of us with 1000+ lbs of crap ( including 35's ) added to the vehicle the OE brakes simply are not strong enough anymore. If the SOS rear disc conversion kit is installed **properly** which includes swapping your master cylinder to the same unit used in a Sequoia then you have just installed a system for a 7000 GVRW truck onto your 5000 lb OE Tacoma or 600 lb "expo'd " Tacoma and you are clearly enhancing your braking capabilities by large percentage. SOS is currently beta testing the kit that includes the master cylinders with adapter plates to bolt right up to our trucks....ask me how I know :)

Just to clarify it does not cost $2800 to do a rear disc conversion, the basic kit which gives your the same rear calipers that the T4R and Sequoia use is only $1098. From what I understand the master cylinder kit is not going to be much at all...stay tuned as soon as it is done and tested it will be posted, there are a few of us testing it currently with the different variations of OE brakes and OE masters.

What kind of side-by-side comparisons have been done with this kit vs the stock drums and all else remaining equal? I'll buy that big brake upgrades to the front of the truck make a difference in cooling and brake fade on long declines with heavy loads. I'm not buying that a rear disk swap makes any appreciable difference without some cold hard data.

Not following your logic here... you install a brake system intended for a vehicle 1 ton heavier and you don't think it is going to stop better ? what am I missing ?
