You're not my daddy! I know the rules and how to use firearms. Just because I am in the life saving service, not life taking service doesn't mean I don't know firearm safety. Thanks for your concern though!

I'd say safe methods are better off.

You know bear bags or hang your food.
Keep it away from where you camp.

At the same time just you being there will often scare them. Few weeks ago on a trail I got out to walk the trail just to see whats ahead if I can make it (as no space to turn around if I can't) as I was walking back my girlfriend started screaming from the truck. When I got back found out she saw there was a bear right by me off to the side. I didn't see it, but I did hear something moving in the bushes as I was walking back.
Only noise that would've come was my keys dangling from my hip and my girlfriend beeped the horn a little tap. Scared it away.

Not my first time seeing a bear. And in all honest I've been hunting before and I'm a hell of a lot more afraid of the wolves I hear all the time than the black bears I see.
As long as you keep some noise as you're walking to not startle them, and to never corner them, go near the cubs and most importantly NEVER run away. They're more likely to be afraid of you and run away.

Only had one bear that didn't just run away when it heard me. It was a black bear. Saw me, looked at me for a few seconds, then just turned around and walked away.

To a degree, I thought the same before I purchased my Tepui Kukenam Ruggedized. After setting it up a few times and getting to appreciate the craftsmanship and detail that goes into a proper RTT, I'd buy it again without any hesitation. Well worth the investment, IMO.

    Right on the money brother.
Maybe cause I was more into bushcraft way before I was into overlanding, I've slept in just a hammock before.
Don't get me wrong getting woken up by something in the bushes scares the fuck outta me each time it happens, but I just get up make a little noise and they piss off.

I really don't get the fad with the RTT, and you listed pretty much every point I'd think of as well.
Only thing to add is the overall cost as well. I mean unless you are using it 4-6 times a month for at least 6-8months of the year its just so expensive.
I know one person from the same 4x4 club that has one, and still don't get why. He uses it maybe 5 times a year. And this is canada where he probably paid close to $2000 for that stupid tent.
Meanwhile I'm more than happy in my MSR elixir 3 tent on the ground.

Truth, worse animal experience I've ever had was not any bears, it was a bunch of fuckin racoons trying to get in the tent when I was like 13 years old with my family camping and my sister was eating popcorn in the tent.
Besides bears aren't after you. They're after food. So seriously considering you're now sleeping above your vehicle where you likely have your cooler full of food, not a good idea. Seems like you're asking for trouble at that point if you ask me.

The level portion is a great point too. If you're wheeling how often are you really on level ground? And that slight difference at the ground is just multiplied up high.

Here is what I did in my garage. Aside from dropping an additional outlet and reinforcing the ceiling, it was a simple install. I spent less than $120 between the hoist, bolts, electrical, and some wood.

My garage is my wood shop, besides the truck is probably too high to fit lol.

Thats why next house will have detached 2 1/2 car wide car and a half deep. That way I can park but still store all my tools and just move them around with the truck out when I need to.

you're in central Kentucky no shit you don't lol.
Winters are 4 months or so here, 3 of those months temps are below -20C, and another 2 months on top of those 4 are still all below 15C.
those EZup won't work here. They also don't provide the same security of having your stuff locked in a garage.

It may be expensive but its kind of necessary here if you want to work year round. Mine is heated electrically and a propane salamander.
Next will have natural gas radiant heater on the roof. Besides I've gutted my whole garage and rewired it, added an addition panel and plugs then insulated etc. I work as an electrician and always been around construction so doing a lot of stuff myself isn't hard.
