How do hammocks handle the cold? I have always wondered.

Haven't been in a hammock under around 50° so I've never cold in a hammock. I dont exclusively hammock, mostly just when im packing light. Last trip (in June) was the first time i hammocked with my kids. We usually use the tent for them. It went pretty good, will definitely be doing it more. Wifey doesn't like them. Exploring the idea of a RTT now, partly for her.

Yeah, hammocks are great when its cool/warm. I have always thought that regardless of the bag, the bottom would get cold since the bag is compressed flat against the material with no insulation from the cold air. Who knows though. Tell you what, the girls I have had in my tent have always appreciated it vs the regular tents. They always worry about the bugs and stuff more than needed and the RTT gives them a sense of security. Cannot say I mind it myself.

It's always enjoyable to see people that buy an overpriced, under-powered, and under-cargo'd pickup, go on and on about how buying a fancy $1500 tent is dumb.

The same feeling is present when others look at your suspension, wheels, tires, armor, stereo system, and all the other crap you have poured your money into.

    to each his own folks.

    To answer the OP:

They are expensive based on what they are and what they do. The material of the tent is only the beginning. You have to have a platform that will cantilever out while supporting 300lbs, be thin and light, and have enough structure to not rip off the mounting points. Then there is design to have it fold up into a nice little box under a cover.

There is some marketing playing into the price, and the market supports that price.

"Overlanding" is a great way for companies to sell some crazy expensive shit to people that can afford it. Every market has this segment. Someone brought AR15s to the table, and we could go on and on with examples; mattresses, houses, bicycles, food, hell even water. When it comes down to it... if *you* are not the target market, then *you* will think it's silly.

I don't expect anyone to understand my motivation for spending $10k on a fancy tent. I don't think the other people who have one do either... or the 50+ on the waiting list.

go give one a try and see if you like it. If you do, that proportion of value : price will shift.

RTTs are for yuppies and easily influenced simpletons that think 1.5 hour drive to the local State park is an excusion. The pictures of "black wheels/fake chrome lip screws with RTT" truck colonies that get posted is nothing short of a cring fest to me.

That said, RTTs have their place if your on safari in Africa or Austrailia where there is an actual threat to your well being on the ground

this thread is turning very funny, everyone wants to say or show how you can do Anything with Less and for Less... but the price of quality shut eye is priceless in the back country.

just dig a trench and sleep in the trench. do not forget to use the dirt as a blanket. great way to avoid bugs and animals and stay warm but not too warm.

hasn't anyone watched those Amazon or alaska survival shows???

You'd probably be a little less abrasive if you got a good nights sleep. Might I suggest a RTT on your next venture into the woods.

hammocks will not handle the cold unless you put a space blanket down (silver mylar)
then they are good to below zero. we use space blankets winter hiking Appalachians and
in the lean-to we set up hammocks to sleep in the air, but space blanket is mandatory

otherwise no matter the cold rating of the sleeping bag, we'd freeze to death

I use a windshield sun reflector, silver one, to sleep on. Works great.

Windshield sun reflectors are for yuppies and simpletons. I am a real adult, my ego keeps me warm.

Eff it, I'm sleeping in ranger graves for now on!

Seriously though, good tip. I'll have to use that int hammock when I am acting too pompous to use my habitat.
