New Differential

Brought my truck in to get the rear diff whine documented for the impending future fix. The adviser just came over and said they are ordering a completely new differential. Holy customer service Batman! The whine isn't nearly as bad as what I had last year in my 2016 Colorado, where they replaced the ring and pinion gears. I'm glad I brought her in today!

 

good customer serviceits easier to replace the whole rear Diff than just ring and pinions on Toyota trucks, I wouldn't worry too much the rear Differential noise it is not associated with the diff failing, most of the time they are low on gear oil in the pumpkin that caused the rear to heat up and then fail, not the design or quality of the diff.

 

Do you think they will take @smitty99 's truck and fix it. Maybe send him the dealership info, maybe worth a drive.

 

I think he has been down that road already, but I am sure he is on the way...

 

Just saw there was another recent thread about this topic, sorry about that. @smitty99 - Folsom Lake Toyota has been nothing short of outstanding to deal with. I bought my 2005 from them and had the front diff replaced at about 25k (gears were disintegrating). Sold it with 95k on it and never had another problem.

 

theres nothing to fix the driveline noise has never been associated with a diff failure, only has been speculation by the 3rd GEN haters club and they aren't automotive engineers or rear difff experts>only in their own minds

 

its always great to be on good terms with the Dealerships, you get more with sugar than you will with salt

 

If I recall correctly they already replaced the diff in Smitty's truck 2 or 3 times already and it still howls so they gave him an extended warranty

 

yes, and the 2-3 replaced make the same noise he says, but still no failures,

 

Figured with a dealership that sounds like they want to help, maybe, just maybe they could help out some of these "POS" tacos out there. But that may be just too much work for one dealership, I mean look at the number of bad 3rd gens we read about.

 

Well, something's better than nothing.....Like @TheCookieMonster says "never had a failure".

 

If it was 3 times, I think it would have been lemoned.

I believe you can't win the lemon law if it's not specific to one vehicle. An ironic twist in the manufactures favor, but they lose credibility. I got lucky and won a lemon law on a Dodge Neon, when I knew others had the same problem but didn't bother to take them in.

I'm on my second howling diff...good luck. After the new one howled, Toyota kind of just went "huh....must be normal then....enjoy!"

 

well in this case it seems like a good outcome the OPs getting a new Diff free of charge, so you cant always throw the baby out with the bath water in every case

 

no, Toyota engineers examined and tested one of the howling differentials from a truck and came to the conclusion its operating as it should, unless you know more about the diff other than it makes a noise after feathering the throttle than I believe the engineers

 

Depends. Is the baby yours? Is it human even? Often times I've found it's not my baby and I didn't want the water anyway, so, you gotta know who you're dealing with.

 

in all fairness a new diff is probably why so many are getting the diff replaced and still having the problems.
Its clearly something at manufacturing level that is causing the whine.

If someone would just take apart the diff and check it out component by component, they could figure out what the fuckin problem is already.
