Actually they inspected the differential and saw "no abnormal signs of wear at this time" and said the howling noise that you can hear with even your windows down at 60 mph is "normal."

No I'm not an automotive engineer but I've been in quite a few cars and trucks. If the noise is "normal" it seems to only be "normal" to the 3rd gen Tacoma.

Noise is a huge part of any automotive/aerospace (which I have experience with) design project. The fact that they let that level of noise, whether it is inherent to the design or not, get by in the final design is surprising, especially since it isn't exactly a pleasant sound. If a differential howls, customers notice it and usually associate it with a problem. Why? Because they aren't used to hearing it in other vehicles. I have a hard time believing that the noise is intentional, it seems more like an oversight that they aren't stepping up to the plate to deal with.

I'm not saying the diff is going to explode, it may never fail, but it will be loud for all of those miles which is still a shitty design if so, seeing as how much effort is put into noise reduction these days, especially with all of the tools available in 2016 (and even the years when they designed the truck to begin with).

if all this is true and your into Aerospace technologies and the noise is so loud at 60 mph, why then during your test drive before purchasing the truck you didn't hear it? at that point I would have to do more test drives on the vehicle to see if the whine is limited to that particular truck or if its a common theme with all of them(test drive another), and then I would make a decision based on my feelings about the rear diff before purchasing.its hard to believe that people as intelligent and astute as you could have let this pass before buying the truck and now complaining of shitty design?

It didn't happen when it was brand new with less than 20 miles on the truck, or at least I didn't notice it. Even the 2nd differential they installed was completely silent for the first 20-30 miles or so, and I was intently listening for it then.

There are some issues that show up later...just like the dash rattling, wooden floorboard clutch pedal, hood adhesive completely disintegrating, head unit randomly restarting, etc etc. Wow what a surprise, the truck didn't present any issues, fresh off the delivery truck, with 10 miles on it.

you should have driven it more than 10 miles cause your story is total fabricated BS, I have driven a 2016 TRD my brother in laws truck it has 40k miles on it his daily driver and have no howling of other issues on lt the TSB for the trans which imp-roved the shift points.

Mine didn't start until 500. Many others share the same experience. A 500 mile test drive isn't going to happen.

If it wasn't happening from the beginning, continues to get louder, and happens at a wider range of speeds it isn't fucking normal.

Haha, wish I could admit it was a lie. I won't the only one either. I took mine in because someone else hadthe same issue. It was the first year of the 2nd gen though....

You say 500 miles, the other Dude says 10 miles then he says the #2 was at 20-30 miles , when you keep putting up inconsistent numbers as to when it happens is dishonest, if there really was an issue it would be present at the time it left the factory not down the road at non consistent miles. as someone elses. The reality is that you haven't done your homework before purchasing the truck and at the time of the test drive when you should be looking for these loud howlings, but now the easy way out on your behalf is to make up lies since you Fed up.

We won't know the outcome till after the OP has it replaced, the new one may also howl and the OP just will have went thru the inconvenience of taking his truck to the dealer and drive a loaner for a few days for nothing.

banking on previous experiences it will probably there on the new one cause this scenario has been run down many times, and was there the day the truck left the factory

Sure thing, the videos I have posted on here documenting it are "BS" as well as the YouTube comments of other owners on the videos saying their's does it as well, as well as the huge thread of owners here saying their's does it, with new owners showing up almost daily. All BS, that's why service departments are replacing entire differentials...to fix an imaginary noise that nobody really hears.

But you are right surely the problem can't exist, because Toyota, and because you drove your brother in law's truck once (or a few times?)

Here, pull up to the table, I'll pour it for you

Mine was totally silent till I got about 300 miles on it then the Howling began. I am at about 3400 miles now and it does not seem any louder but it is now unfortunately happening in a wider range of speed. Certainly not a normal characteristic!

you didn't do your homework on the test drive to make sure you know what your getting, its your fault, don't blame Toyota or anyone else

Dude... calm down! No need to call people liars. If his diff wasn't howling they wouldn't be replacing it.

I've never heard this howling. My grandfathers 80s toyota pickup had a distinctive tranny whine. And I noticed it on my 95, my 01 has it, as it always has. I don't notice it on my 17. I've wondered if this is what people are hearing, and they've just never owned a Toyota pickup before. They are just now crossing over from the family station wagon thing. Could possibly be the same people who require auto/heated seats and frappe chillers.

Oh and welcome/just sayin/IBT "for 40k i want heated seats, john Mayer satellite radio stations pre programmed, trd logo wine decanter, fresh Brie and crackers while I wait for my oil change"

I have owned a 1st Gen, 2 2nd Gens, and now a 3rd Gen and have never had a Howling Rear Diff until now. Plus 77% of Tacoma buyers are repeat customers which is the highest of all pickup truck buyers. Not sure what model 17 you have but the Howling mainly seems to be in the Off Roads.

this is exactly correct my 95 has a distinctive driveline noise since It left the factory it has 200k++ miles and has never failed and doesnt bother me at all. and I also agree that these people aren't really truck people they think the truck should be as quiet and ride like a Caddy when it aint going to happen its a truck not a Honda accord.
