It's a regear, not an exchange.

It's also a future future plan. Will be after front 5100s, sliders, and skids.
I figure by the time I can comfortably afford all those things, I'll be needing new tires by then and ready to size up and regear

You CAN do that, but I am not. It's a regear inside the front diff, similar to the rear.

This is my daily, you think I'm gonna drop out my stock front diff, let the truck sit for who knows how long, send off the front diff, and then install another one?

    Wrong

    Not how it works...

They send you assembled diffs. You remove yours, install theirs, send yours back to them. Pay a core charge in the interim.

Unless you can do your own set up, it's cheaper AND fastest way to do a gear change.

    Oh, I'll get it done!
Cousin's BIL, who is a hack mechanic (works at a Ford dealer) said he would help/supervise me.

If dad wasn't such a pickle smoocher and the urge to knock his teeth down his throat wasn't so strong, I'd make his worthless ass help.
He's a real mechanic, heavily educated and close to 40 years experience.

Not in the literal sense, but figurative. I could actually have a clean conscience if his wife fell down a 100' cliff with alligators and sharks waiting at the bottom.

ANYONE with a set of tools and an IQ over 75 can tear down a diff and re-assemble it.

About 1 in 10,000 mechanics can install a ring and pinion and expect it to last.

    Seriously.

Not that I don't have faith in you.....I don't have faith in some of the most skilled, experienced mechanics I know.

I've done (literally) hundreds of them and I still questioned my own ability.

Blow up one ring and pinion and you just spent enough to pay the difference in cost between an exchange and doing it yourself.

There are several participants in this conversation that I wouldn't hesitate to say are EXPERT level mechanics that saw fit to forego doing self-installed ring and pinions. That speaks volumes.

Not trying to tell you what to do, but knowing your situation well enough from your own words, I'd HIGHLY recommend core exchange.
