4Runner 4.0L vs Taco 3.5L

Out of curiosity and original interest in the 4runner I decided to do a test drive of one.

I've seen numerous accounts of how the 4 Runner doesn't have the issues the Taco does in terms of power and power band. And that it doesn't have the rush to shift up or hunting problems that the Taco does.

I can tell you without a doubt that the latter is correct. It definitely holds gears (also has a 5 speed instead of a 6) / cruises better. But for those of you that says it is "noticably" or "superior" to the Taco in terms of its having "balls". Its power band is up in the 3K range just like ours, even in the 4.0L. So you're going to have to explain to me how, other than the transmission differences, the 4.0L that's in the Taco 2015 and before, is "so much better", which is the same one in the current 4runners as far as I can tell.

Oh and by the way, according to my dealer, in a couple of years they're putting the Taco's 3.5L in the 4Runners, maybe then you'll have something to bitch about.

 

The 3.5 simply isn't a truck engine. Yes it makes more power, but you need to make it sing. I would have loved it if they kept the 4.0 and put the 3.5 tech on top of it.

 

That's a different market, how about vs tundra, hilander..

also, extra $3000~6000 on 4runner trd off road than taco or.

Obviously, 4 runner still a good choice, my heart was fighting when i went to

the dealer. Toco wins. I am happy the extra is the canopy....

You forgot one thing... the 4.0 that's in the current T4R is MORE powerful than the 2nd gen V6.. owners love that too.

 

I personally liked the low end torque of the 4.0, I also like the smoothness of the 3.5.

 

Idk I hear that the 4.0 in the 4runner feels under powered and sluggish, reading the 4runner forums. A lot of mass to move around...

 

The engines in the G2 and the 4Runner/FJ are not the same 1GRs

 

We've got a 3.3 Highlander, 3.4 Taco, 3.5 Highlander and a 4.0 4Runner. I've driven the new 3.5 Taco. I've gotta agree, the 3.4 and 4.0 feel like solid truck engines while the 3.3 and 3.5s are quick to rev but the torque band requires higher RPM.

 

This. The older 1GR was the "peppier" engine. It's in my 2007 FJ. The 2010 4Runner and FJ received the present day 4.0.

 

On paper....it's the opposite. But maybe not in the real world

1GR Taco application = 236hp and 266 lb ft of torque .

1GR (dual VVT-i) 4Runner application = 270hp and 278 lb ft of torque.

The 4Runner's 1GR also has the cartridge oil filter

 

i would have been ok with the 4.0 in the 3rd gen.
with a 6 speed transmission. oil filter on the top
of the engine. fumoto valve on the bottom.

 

2nd gen taco has more hp/lb than T4R.

But I admit, T4R is awesome and maybe my next vehicle when the time comes.

 

Ditto, even though it has more hp, it's always been a complaint that it just isn't enough for the extra weight.

4runners are family wagons, they need that extra 34hp to pull the wife, kids and all the shit they have.
