Yes, you will see it holding 4 more as well.. Min upshift to 5th is 52 mph. If you are light on throttle, it will upshift at that speed. The jump up in gear ratio from 4-5 is pretty extreme in this transmission, so its either running well at 2200/2300 rpm in 4, or dropping to 1300/1400 in 5th.. Tough spot. Definitely understand there is a lot of personal preference involved, but shifting to 5th any earlier drops the engine down into this sub 1500 RPM, which will get into lugging and bucking in some situations, and also gets back into the 4/5/4/5 hunting because RPM gets too low to sustain 5th on anything other than flat or downhill. Again, eliminating the lugging and the hunting of the OEM shift map were the primary goals of the SSPro.

ARound town i just use D in most situations now.

As long as with the FWC on the truck it will just hold 5th over a minor hill in cruise, id be happy

EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT explanation! I kind of wish I didn't even know this truck had a 6th gear since it is so worthless. Then it wouldn't even bother me at all that it never gets used.

I got mine Thursday and was finally able to install it this morning. I did a little bit of driving around town after install, and it makes a good bit of difference. For the people that complain that it holds 4th for too long, and that it should shift up to 5th around there, I'm going to have to disagree with you. I like the fact that it stays in 4th right there, because many times I've tried to give it gas at 45 and it takes forever to downshift to get to a better gear to accelerate. Leaving it in 4th allows the truck to accelerate from 45 if needed. With my short test drive, I'm impressed with this.

I guess you might be looking at regearing if you want to solve your problem.

Maybe you are too young to remember when there were NO overdrive gears with an auto trans . In the 70's to 80's and before ,there was only three speeds and the 3 rd gear was 1 to 1 . Now there are double overdrives ( 2 extra gears that are over drives beyond 1 to 1 ). Just because there is an extra over drive gear does not mean the truck can use it at all times !!!! It is for downhill, flat, no wind driving at 40mph . EPA crap.

    Guess what

This is 2017. Not the 70s and 80s

I will certainly have to regear
I will say, this does keep it in gear longer, so if im not in cruise, i can make it up an overpass without it downshifting

However, when in cruise and it downshifts, it wont go back to 5th, unless i blip the throttle and then it will go to 5th.

SSP is clearly tuned for stock tire size, so you will obviously see some kinks with bigger tires, just like happens with regular transmission. It was worth a try for you, but I guess it failed.

    not necessarily failed

It did not completely solve the problems, but it did markedly improve the situation, so that is a win. Its only like 30% grades that are a big issue (I.E. steep freeway overpasses). So for me its a worthwhile investment IMO.

For you stock guys, this should completely fix any issues you think you had

I finally got around to installing, stupidly routed the wire in wrong and want to unplug shiftsense to correct it. The OEM connector had a tab on top for easy removal but I can't find a tab on the shiftsense connector. Where is it?

No locking tab on the male connector. There are two small buttons on top of the connector to hold it in place once it engages into the OEM receptacle. Grab it carefully with some pliers (connector, not wires) and it should pull right out. Nothing to unlock...

I installed today and drove around 60 miles of city street and highway, with speeds ranging from 30 to 80. Shifting was impeccable. Thank you for fixing my truck.

UPDATE: the initial problem I was having with error codes being thrown was solved by removing the unit, reseating all connections and making sure no wires were pulled tight. Could have been a loose connection but three tanks of gas and no errors since. Love the way it drives (not perfect, but much better) and I do not miss 6th gear. My mileage (which has always been extremely low (15-16MPG in general) is *slightly* better with this. I think mainly because my foot is not so deep trying to make it go! :) Next upgrade might be a better engine tune which I see posts flying around about. Can't wait to hear some reviews on how it feels after that.

I really didn't have any complaints about how my truck drives prior to installing the SSP but after using it for a couple of weeks now, I can't imagine not having it, definitely worth the purchase for me.

I installed mine last Thursday (in the blistering Florida humidity!) and instantly noticed a difference. I stuck mine further back towards my feet instead of closer to the hand brake just so it's more out of the way. I was confused about why it stays in 4th so much but after reading the posts here it makes more sense. I just notice each gear so much more after having the Flowmaster 40 put on, but it's nice having power at-the-ready instead of having to mashing the accelerator to get the truck going.

Driving in D just acts super funky, not how any other Toyota I've driven has acted. It's a shame that the SSPro was even needed as it should be perfect on a $30k+ truck.

lol... if you want your truck to shift EXACTLY how you want it to, then get a manual transmission. I wish I could have in my truck, but the only way to get a Sport V6 w/ a manual was in a 4x4, which I have no need for and did not want.

I love this little thing. Do I use it all the time? No... but it's great when I'm hitting the hilly back-roads between my house and Lowe's on a week-end and I don't want it to shift every 200 yards. It does exactly what their website states and it works.

I wish folks would stop looking for perfection and realize what these guys did. They put something together that fixes... I dunno... around 90% of the issues that people were noting w/ their truck's transmission. That's not bad for <$200 and 15 minutes of your time.
