It's a mid (also called tipi tent). Very popular in the backpacking/hunting world. Hyperlite Mountain Gear and Seek Outside are two well regarded manufactures - 100% USA made both.

So how does that work? Say I wanted to camp out there in any states offroad. Do I need a permit or do I just pick a spot remotely away from the roads and just camp out?

I have a daily driver Tacoma. Do I need a green sticker or something?

I have a Kifaru sticker on the cooler lol. I doubt there's any difference between Kifaru and SeekOutside other than the price

Check each National Forests webpage. The rules do vary. We go to Inyo NF frequently. Dispersed camping is allowed in almost all their areas. Find a spot. Camp.

The fire regulations vary also. Go online and get your free CA fire permit. You need one even to run a stove.

Looks like you have the Voodoo mid rack with OEM tonneau brackets. Are the brackets strong enough to hold up your RTT with you in it? I want to go this route but afraid brackets may bend lol. Thx

Yes. they are pretty strong brackets. No bend at all so far after I've used it 4 times. @KB Voodoo makes great quality stuff. I should mention that my tent is only a two person and I've been alone each trip. Your mileage may vary with a family of 4 in a monster RTT.

    Thanks!

That's a spot East of Ocotillo Wells down here in San Diego and Imperial counties. If you ever have a chance to make it down this way for several days, definitely check out Anza Borrego State Park. It's pretty vast on its own, but when you add the BLM area to the East, it's massive. Just don't do it in the Summer months. It averages 110+ out there this time of year.

520 mile trip to do some Desert Bighorn sheep scouting. Only passed one gas station during the whole trip. 200 miles of dirt road.

Thanks. This was not for work, I drew a Desert Sheep tag so was doing my first recon trip.

No upgrade on the tent. This is the same one I've had.
