Why do Dogs like to stick their heads out of the window so much???????

It was an amazingly beautful St. Patricks Day up here in the Northeast.
Of course I had the truck's driver side window open for the first time in months.
The minute Simon hears the crack of the window, he leaps from his bed in the backseat, over the console to my lap to stick his head out the window. He is like a madman who cannot wait to feel the breeze.

Well, his timing happened to be when the truck his some rough road & pitched him, literally out the window. I had to grab the little bugger by his chicken legs. It freaked me out so bad, I let go of the wheel which was tricky since I was in traffic going around a curve. Luckily, everyone survived including other the guy I almost hit saving my dog.

I'm going to make a little barricade now to keep him in the back so there will be no next time.
How do the little dog owners travel with their dogs in the truck? He loves the truck but doesn't necessarily do well in a cage though I know that is probably the easiest/safest way.

I am thinking more on a platform so he can see out the cracked window & maybe a barricade. Any ideas/pics of your setups welcomed!

I had a Jeep Wrangler a few years back and my Dobbie @ 110 lbs (Turbo) used to like to stand w/rear paws on the back seat and front paws on the center console/armrest and stand there looking over the top of the windshield w/top down...



Tall muscular dogs are just too top-heavy for that kinda stuff... keep that window just cracked enough for their head... glad it wasn't worse...

I used to also keep his lease on him so I had something to grab just in case.

 

They make seatbelt harnesses for dogs. Get one of those and everyone will be safer. You could probably even adjust it a bit so he can stick his nose out without falling out.

Just google "seatbelts for dogs" There a number of websites that will come up with various products.

 

I only crack the windows because my dog is crazy and will take a flying leap. When she is in the bed I keep her on a short chain.

 

I used to keep a leash on my lab when she was young and riding shotgun. I secured the leash to the door (F150) with enough slack that she could put her face to the wind, but not enough slack to allow her to climb on or exit the window.

My dog is pretty good, she just sits in the passenger seat (if the wife isn't riding with us) and looks out the window - prairie doggin', which I leave up. If i lower any of the other windows she sniffs a lot, but never moves towards them. Sorry I can't help any.

Here you go! This is from a bike forum that I belong to.

 

Now that the weather is getting nice my dog rides in the bed of the truck. But sometimes I do let him ride in the cab. I have taught him that he is not allowed to get up on the window sill. He can put his head out, but not put his legs up.

 

I tie my dog to the headrest via a harness. Hes a small dog but acts just like yours does, crazy when he hears the window crack open.

While at a local Target store last year, he was hanging out in my rear passenger side window, with his paws on the armrest and head out the window (hes small so he has to use the armrest). I was just cruising around the parking lot because no parking could be found and my wife had ran inside the store to grab something. I came around a corner and some idiot Honda Accord almost hit me as he was speeding through the parking lot. To try and avoid him I made a quick left and my dog fell out the window. He was hanging from his harness about 10 inches below the window, scarred shitless. Glad I used the harness though.

I have this booster seat for Tank, it has a strap on the back part that attaches to a harness so the dog can't get out. It's for dogs up to 30lbs. It's actually a little bigger than it looks in that pic. It's made by Outward Hound.

I have a few ideas to check out. Right now he is in a wire collapsible crate when I am driving.

 

Mine are trained that they are to be lying down at all times when in the truck.
